Summary/Abstract: The autor of the article shows difficulties in rendering the last verse of Norwid’s “Ogólniki” [“Generalities”] in which the poet expressed his artstic credo. Various researchers differently interpret every single word constituing the poem’s punchline: “odpowiednie dać rzeczy – słowo!” which impedes maintainng its polysemy in translation. Multiple commentaries on Norwid’s text are discussed in the article as well as seven different English renditions of the poem’s last verse.
