Summary/Abstract: This study commemorates the activity of Károly Szathmáry Pap at the 200th anniversary of his birth. He was born in Cluj/Kolozsvár of a famous Calvinist family. He studied in the Reformed College of his home town, where he also started his artistic career. For a short period he was a civil servant. Then he studied drawing and painting in Vienna and Italy. Beginning with 1840 he worked as a portraitist in Transylvania. He also painted landscapes. In 1843 he was invited to Bucharest, where he became a very fashionable artist, painter of the royal court. Beginning with 1848, he also became interested in photography. He participated in the Balkan Wars as war-correspondent, taking pictures of different moments of military operations.
