Summary/Abstract: In 2010, the North Atlantic Alliance and Russia decided examining possible areas for co-operation on territorial missile defense. Thus, it was at the Lisbon Summit that the NRC agreed to discuss pursuing and exploring ballistic missile defense co-operation. In this sense, as a general consideration, effective co-operation with Russia could enhance the overall effectiveness and efficiency of NATO and Russia’s combined territorial missiles defenses, while providing the latter with greater security. As an initial step, however, NATO and Russia agreed at the time on a joint ballistic missile threat assessment, a comprehensive joint analysis of the future framework for BMD co-operation, as well as that the NRC would resume the theatre missile defense co-operation interrupted in 2008.
