Summary/Abstract: Russia plays a major role in the Black Sea region given its huge energy supplies and the potential of one of the strongest naval forces in the Black Sea. However, Russia faces the challenge of assuring stability at its southern borders and dealing with the frozen conflicts of South Ossetia, Nagorny Karabakh and Chechnya. Moreover, Russia has been engaged in the effort of maintaining its regional influence in the context of NATO and EU enlargement to South-Eastern Europe. The author concludes that, despite the mentioned difficulties, there is hope for Russia to regain its status of world great power through economic growth.
