Summary/Abstract: The novelisation of the Constitution of the Polish People’s Republic of 7 April1989 granted the President the role of a preserver of observing internationalmilitary alliances, which is commonly linked in doctrine with Poland’s membershipin the Warsaw Pact. The first part of the article presents the origin of the discussednovelisation of the Constitution of the Polish People’s Republic and motivesof reinstating the office of the President to the Polish constitutional order. Thesecond part of the article contains characteristics of formal and actual aspectsof the Warsaw Pact. The third part presents the geopolitical situation of Polandin the second half of the eighties in the 20th century, with a particular emphasisput on dangers related thereto. The next part covers the analysis of the President’scompetencies which enable him to perform the title role. The fifth part describesthe road of Wojciech Jaruzelski to the presidency and characterizes the wayof pursuing Poland’s international policy after the victory of the Solidarity campin the June election. The last, sixth part indicates the reasons the legislator wasguided by entrusting the President with the title role.
