Summary/Abstract: The article presents results obtained through a study on Bulgarian media during the presidential election in 2016. Use of hate speech is evident, which is incompatible with the mission of journalism. But it is namely the hate speech that replaced the sensible and expert talk in media. Media continue giving voice of individuals who use populism for their political programmes. Refugees and terrorists are discussed in a general way. No clear difference is made when using the terms 'refugee' and 'migrant'. People, who seek to save their lives elsewhere, are demonized.
