Summary/Abstract: The aim of the study was to present the main economic indicators used to measure effectiveness of hospitals and other healthcare entities, both defined by the rules of polish law and scientific studies. Author, on the basis of his professional experience, defined his propositions of new, more precise indicators, that got divided into two groups – economic/ financial activities of hospitals and their medical activities. Those ratios may be used as a complement for the basic indicators, extending benchmarking tools based on those with more general nature. As the new indicators are better adapted to the medical sector and the character of specific healthcare entities, in some cases they may be considered as a better tool for assessment of operational activities of hospitals than some of the common indicators (which are universal and doesn’t take account of some aspects specific for a healthcare sector, in particular hospitality).
