Summary/Abstract: Dushanbe has seen nothing like this for a decade. For the first time since the early 1990s, before the civil war broke out, hundreds of people have, since late August, been holding unsanctioned demonstrations. First, hundreds gathered spontaneously outside the office of the General Prosecutor. Then, on 20 August, thousands marched on the president’s palace, where they were stopped by the police. Similar scenes were repeated in other parts of the capital.
