Summary/Abstract: During the last decade, there was a decrease in the frequency of cardiovascular diseases within the total mortality statistics for the Republic of Croatia. According to the data provided by the Croatian National Institute of Public Health, the percentage of mortality by cardiovascular diseases has since 2009 been reduced to less than 50 % thanks to higherquality treatment of acute myocardial infarction (conducted since 2005) and prevention programmes being carried out. The percentage of mortality by cardiovascular diseases has in the Bjelovar-Bilogora County for years been by 5–10 % higher than in other Croatian counties. The demographic structure, nourishment specificities and levels of physical activities, indicators of socio-economic conditions (income, education, profession, social activity in the community), psycho-social factors (emotional factors, chronic stress), and the organisation of health protection through dynamic operation influence the occurrence and outcome of the disease, which is particularly expressed in the area of the Bjelovar-Bilogora County. The paper presents mortality by cardiovascular diseases in the Bjelovar-Bilogora County during the last two decades, the frequency of classic biological risk factors (arterial hypertension, cigarette smoking, hyperlipidaemia, diabetes, etc.), and socio-economic conditions; it also indicates to the specificities of life in the Bjelovar-Bilogora County. No difference has been established regarding the frequency of arterial hypertension, cigarette smoking, dyslipidaemia, diabetes or data on positive family history of anamneses of hospitalised patients (suffering from coronary artery diseases) from the area of the Bjelovar-Bilogora County in comparison with the data relating to Croatia on the whole. In conclusion: knowledge of the impact of biological, psychological, psychiatric and social factors may improve the prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and outcome of cardiovascular diseases.
