Summary/Abstract: I would like to raise a few questions about the idea of nation as it evolved among the Romanians of Transylvania in the eighteenth and the first half of the nineteenth century* 1. These questions may be simply put: When did the idea of nation, in the modern meaning of the term appear? What was the importance of the ethnic community in its evolution, that is to say, how far back into the past should we search for the origins of the modern nation? And who formulated the idea of nation and propagated it, and, in the process, elaborated a national ideology?
