Summary/Abstract: The physician, journalist, writer, poet, traveller and, above all, citizen of the world and truly all-round and modern personality Ludwig August Ritter von Frankl- -Hochwart (1810–1894) was born into a Jewish family in the village of Chrast, Bohemia. He spent his early student years at the Piarist Gymnasium in Prague’s New Town and later in Litomyšl (Leitomischl). In Vienna he started a medicine course which he completed in Padua, Italy, where he graduated in 1837. After returning to Vienna, he started his own medical practice. His carrier in medicine, however, did not last long, for a year later he accepted the position of secretary of the Vienna Jewish Community. He remained in this position while being able to devote himself to literature and other activities. In 1841 he became editor of the Österreichisches Morgenblatt. He also founded the weekly paper Sonntagsblätter, which soon gained a solid footing in Austrian cultural and political life, retaining it until 1848.
