Summary/Abstract: By the summer of 1989, Hungary had already officially redefined Romania as its main enemy and its main military threat. The Hungarian Foreign Minister Horn then tried to persuade Gorbachev, Rijkov and Sevardnadze to approve an intervention in Romania, an endeavor which was nevertheless unsuccessful in the end.The Secretary General of the Warsaw Pact, Ivan Aboinov, the leader of the Soviet crisis group, noted that "Hungary wanted us to intervene in Romania because it hoped to solve the problem of Transylvania."Actually, upon the creation of Great Romania, all minorities, including the Hungarian one, had pledged their allegiance to the union, even the great Hungarian aristocratic families.
