Summary/Abstract: John Paul II extended the theological and philosophical background of sport much more than any of his predecessors in the Holy See. In his speeches and homilies he referred to the broadly defined physical culture and engaged in sport is- sues. During his youth, he was interested in tourism (especially in the Tatras nature), canoeing and football. His attitude towards sport did not change when he became a priest or a bishop. He later became a tourist pope. Sport and tourism combine cog- nitive goals with an equivalent physical effort. This article focuses on threads related to sport and mountain tourism that are selected from Pope John Paul II's speeches delivered during his pilgrimages to the homeland.
