Summary/Abstract: The present article aims to synthesize the most important characteristics of the education system in communist Romania (1948-1989) and the dysfunctions that characterized the state of this system in the first decades after the fall of the old regime. We will analyze, for a start, the theoretical-ideological premises of the socialist-communist education (paternalism, centralism, uniformity, correlation with the sphere of production, etc.), and then we will exemplify, by means of empirical data and by resorting to the works of important exegetes, the evolutionary directions, the strengths and weaknesses of education in Romania during the communist period. At the same time, we have proposed a review of the educational policies adopted by the communist governments and of the dimensions that the education crisis has foreshadowed in the Romanian society since 1989.
