Reform of the Italian penitentiary system: innovations in a prison life

Summary/Abstract: The article details the changes introduced into the Italian penitentiary law by legislative decrees of October 2, nos. 123 and 124, with an emphasis on the rights of detainees. The author highlights the positive and negative aspects of the reform, which, on the one hand, introduces some improvements regarding a life inside the prison, but on the other hand, fails to intervene in matter of measures alternative to detention and in overcoming the legislative automatism and restrictions pertaining to the access to penitentiary benefits, depending on the type of a committed crime.
