Summary/Abstract: Running in the security studies is often at first marked by the concept of "national interest". National interest leads to the formulation of a national strategy and of the calculation of the power necessary to support that strategy. Although it has lain at the very heart of many analysis (including intelligence), it seems to be a difficult concept to define. The most frecquent meaning is crisp and clear: what's good for the nation as a whole. But "what's good for the nation?" And who defines the national interest? Upon reflection, one realizes how hard it is to offer a complete definition and turn "national interest" into working strategy. Even harder if considering that the concept of national interest is more often assumed than analysed in the dynamic context of domestic and international politics.
