Summary/Abstract: The iconography of the medieval tiles discovered în Romania includes also compositions themes inspired by hagiographic legends. The scene depicting "Saint George slaying the dragon" îs widely represented both în Transylvania and Moldavia, as well as în Wallachia. The Saint, often în equestrian, îs representing with halo on certain pieces, maintaining the influence ofthe Byzantine style. On other stove tiles the Saint îs depicted with annour, as a medieval knight. In Wallachia, certain terracotta plates were used as icons. The artistic rendering of this scene îs different, corresponding to the specialisation levei of the workshops producing such pieces. The discovery places of these objects are diverse: princely courts, urban houses, rural dwellings, churches or monasteries.
