Summary/Abstract: The ecumenical program of St. John Paul II is characterized not only by the horizontal dimension, which is carried in personal meetings, in the exchange of thoughts and spiritual gifts. It also includes a vertical dimension, consisting in “mutual and reciprocal recognition of our condition as people who have sinned,” which, according to John Paul II – opens “an internal space in which Christ as the source of the Church’s unity can effectively act by the power of the Spirit – the Paraclete” (UUS, no. 35). By giving ecumenism priority in the program of its ministry, John Paul II pays special attention to two elements. They are: “memory and its purification and reconciliation.”
