Summary/Abstract: The article is a contribution to the debate on the person and work of Martin Luther as well as his legacy within the context of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. The aim is to re-read Luther against ecumenical background, without prejudices and a priori negative assumptions. It is the Roman Catholic - Lutheran dialogue – reflected in relevant documents – that sets out interpretation pathways on a global forum. Two of these documents deserve special attention: Martin Luther - a witness to Jesus Christ (published on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of birth of Martin Luther [1983]) and From conflict to communion (2013) (a document preparing the Churches to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017). An important role in the process of transforming the way of thinking of and assessing the person and legacy of M. Luther in various Catholic circles is played by official statements of popes, starting from pontificate of John Paul II. These will also be recalled and analyzed. Statements by Roman Catholic theologians on Luther and Reformation will also be presented. They provide a good opportunity to trace the change of paradigms in the Catholic interpretation of Luther and his legacy.
