POLYPHENOLIC CONTENT AND ANTIOXIDANT CAPACITY OF HONEYDEW HONEY: COMPARISON BETWEEN ROMANIAN AND OTHER SOUTH EUROPEAN DECLARED HONEYDEW HONEYS

Summary/Abstract: Total polyphenols, radical scavenging activity, antioxidant power and Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity from different honeydew honey samples originating from Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece and Turkey were evaluated. Polyphenols, expressed as mgGAE/100 g honey, ranged from 53.91 to 196.0 mgGAE in Romanian honey; 118.46 to 133.12 mgGAE in Bulgarian honey; 94.58 to 133.92 mgGAE in Croation honey, a mean of 80.85 mgGAE in Greece honey and 70.45 mgGAE in Turkey honey. The Romanian honey presented the lowest values for antiradical scavenging activity and antioxidant power, as assessed with DPPH and FRAP assays, Croatian honeydew honey presented the highest radical scavenging activity (1.39 mmol Trolox/100g honey) and Bulgarian honey presented the highest value of total antioxidant power (11.45 mmols Fe2+/100 g honey). Regarding the Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity, the lowest activity was registered in Turkish honey (1.87 mmol Trolox/100 g) and the highest activity in Croatian honey (5.21 mmol Trolox/100 g). The relationship between total polyphenolic content and the antioxidant activity of these honeys was also discussed.
