Summary/Abstract: In the 1980s, Janos Kis was one of the leading Hungarian dissident intellectuals. His proposals for reform helped accustom Hungarians to the idea that socialism as it was practiced in Eastern Europe could be drastically changed without violent upheaval. He and others were not proposing a confrontational, direct attack on communism, which was likely to result in a bloody tragedy, but an indirect, seemingly very gradual evolution toward something more rational, humane, and efficient.
