Summary/Abstract: Traian Mager was an important intellectual from Arad from the first half of the 20th century. Professor at the Normal Pedagogical School in Arad (Preparandia), ecologist, photographer, sociologist author of an award-winning monographic work on the land of Hălmagiu etc. In his youth he fought in the First World War in the Austro-Hungarian army, and in the autumn of 1918 and the first part of 1919 he contributed to the establishment of the Romanian National Guard from Hălmagiu and through it to the implementation of the decision to unite Transylvania with Romania. He described his experiences from 1918-1919 in a journal published in 1939 as the fourth volume of the monograph Ţinutul Hălmagiului. In 1943 he tried to resume and enrich the journal, but did not complete his intention to republish it. The 1943 version of the journal is preserved only in manuscript. In this article we have tried to compare the two versions and highlight the role of Professor Mager in the events of 1918-1919. Mager’s diary is a precious testimony of that period, showing an aspect of history less valued, like the one regarding the way in which the Union and the struggle for national emancipation of the Romanians in Transylvania were lived by ordinary people.
