Summary/Abstract: The author focuses on and analyzes a distinctive constitutive element of education – education for values – in an attempt to demonstrate that this is the foundation of any educational undertaking. Taking advantage of her vast teaching experience, while successfully making use of the data and the information she possesses, including the conclusions of a poll she organized amongst teachers of socio-humanistic sciences, the author brings into relief the gap between the discourse and the actual state of affairs, the gap between “what we 'teach/preach' and what we 'practice'”, as well as the consequences produced by this gap in terms of the quality of the school environment and the shaping of the students' personality. Education for values is approached in its twofold aspect: the formal, explicit one (visible in the extent values are present and asserted in the fundamental documents of the educational system) and the informal, implicit one (which is visible in several aspects of the way the teaching staff members interact with and effectively achieve the axiological component of the current educational undertakings). Based upon a critical analysis of the actual state of affairs characterizing the educational system, the author suggests what should be done for discipline and education for values to become the “hard core” of life in school, of the view about the role it has – which any school organization defines and puts to practice – to turn into a catalyst of the educational community, within which, in fact, each school is born.
