Summary/Abstract: The correspondence between gender identity of individuals and their visual identity in contemporary society appears in several distinct situations and is underlined by effeminacy, masculinizing or androgynous. Individuals can express ambivalent situations through what they wear. Those situations communicate either characteristics that are specific to the opposite of their gender or ambiguous images through the masculine and feminine elements that relate in a dual, androgynous interference. Clothes are for individuals a means of expression of individual and collective identity as well as of gender identity, specifically directed to male or female or positioned at the boundary between them. In a contemporary society marked by fragmentation, diffusion and an accelerated rhythm of transformations, individuals are constantly in a process of searching for their own identity, and also of establishing and reestablishing their identity of gender, a pursuit that is also transposed into their unstable clothing image. If we accept the idea that sex is a stable subject and it depends on the material dimension of the body; and that the gender is an unstable subject, exposed to changes, depending on the state of mind and on the relationship between individuals and social environment, then it is a matter of-course that the identity of the clothing changes depending on the new visions of the social gender stereotypes.
