Summary/Abstract: The presented study deals with the work of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer in the diocese of České Budějovice in the 1920s. At the request of the Czechoslovak party, Pope Benedict XV shortly after 1918 decided that the redemptorist college in České Budějovice would be attached to the Prague province and the remaining three German ones transformed into a special viceprovincie, subordinated to the general order in Rome. This act aroused a strong resistance of the public, especially among local German Catholics. The study analyzes the background of this important decision, which did not only influence the ideas of the Holy See about religious conditions in Czechoslovakia, but also influenced the life of the religious community in České Budějovice. The whole dispute represents one of the most strained diplomatic conflicts in Czechoslovak Vatican relations between the two world wars. The study is based on a large source base which put the influence of the redemptorists in the diocese of České Budějovice into the wider political religious context of the time.
