Summary/Abstract: The aim of the study is to examine the genre of Margaret Atwood’s work, The Handmaid’s Tale, which I tried to approach from several points of view. In the genre analysis of the novel, it is compared to a dystopia, an antiutopia, and a tale. The former may be interesting in terms of world-construction and thematic elements, the latter in terms of the issue of reality content arising from mediation. I examine testimony as a possible genre, following through the elements of the genre in the traditional sense. The study concludes that The Handmaid’s Tale is nothing more than Offred’s testimony, which he records on audio tapes in order to preserve the terror of the Republic of Gilead for future generations.
