Summary/Abstract: This article explores the main constitutional features of federalism in a theoretical and comparative perspective. It starts with the conceptualisation of vertical pluralisation of the levels of territorial distribution of power. Different modes for deductive as well as inductive vertical pluralisation are described and illustrated with concrete comparative examples. Then a general analysis of the federal state and its main characteristics is made. Furthermore, the various types of federations and federalisms are systematically compared and classified. The determinants for the creation and existence of federations as well as the pros and cons of the federal form of government are emphasized. An attempt is made to explore the federalism as a complex phenomenon with constitutional as well as social implications.
