Summary/Abstract: The author follows Nesselmann in assuming that OPr. aukis ‘grif (EV 708), rather than referring to the fabulous creature, denotes an existing bird, the bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus). He rejects the reading ankis proposed by some scholars and connects aukis with the Lith. verb aukuoti ‘rock, sway’, assuming that the word is not onomatopoeic but refers to the visual image of the soaring bird of prey.
