Summary/Abstract: The following article examines the possibilities of using dynamics and timbre as means of building an interpretation that distinctly outlines the polyphonic phenomena in Sergei Prokofiev’s piano sonatas. Although they are object of many theoretical studies, usage of imitative and non-imitative polyphonic techniques, and the consequent specific problems of interpretation are not sufficiently researched. Adopted as a methodological basis, are the twelve composition principles of voice leading, derived from David Huron’s monograph “Voice Leading: The Science Behind a Musical Art”. The following study is the first attempt for these principles to be considered from a performance perspective in piano compositions, and Prokofiev’s piano sonatas in particular.
