The paper deals with the peculiarities of ESP learning motivation. The meaning of motivation and three main approaches to motivational psychology: expectancy-value theory, goal-directed theory and the self-determination theory are presented, two distinct orientations for learning a language: integrative and instrumental are described in the paper. The importance of needs analysis to ESP learning is stressed and the main conditions (interest in the topic and activity; relevance to the students'lives; expectancy of success and feelings of being in control and satisfaction in the outcome) for motivation are described. The skills that ESP learners need to develop are specified. The description of approaches to motivational psychology is proposed, as motivation is of great significance in foreign language learning.

The paper deals with the structure of foreign languages teaching at higher non – linguistic school complex methods and the problems of its formation. It supposed that teaching means should correspond to the teaching stage requirements and the students studying capabilities. Two teaching stages at a non – linguistic higher school and the usable means are discussed in the paper. Rational teaching subjects selects selection, their methodical organization and means are stressed. The adequate and sufficient number of linguistic abilities developing exercises should be prepared for different fields of linguistic activities. The presented paper should be of practical importance for the work with the students.

The article deals with some of the results of the extensive research carried out at VGTU. The authors give the overview of the concept of metacognition, its constituent parts, as well as suggest the detailed analysis of the processed data. The main research hypothesis that students mastered their metacognitive strategy and tactics in the learning process usually achieve better results is proved statistically. One of the conclusions made is that current needs (social, cultural, technological changes in the society) towards foreign language learning do not require short-term knowledge. Rather they require flexibility and higher order thinking skills which are a part of metacognition.
