How citizens make their voting decision? Which criteria have the biggest influence on the voting decision? How political parties make their decisions during voting campaign? What is the role of ideologies in present politics? To answer these questions the political science produced a lot of theoretical models. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the economic method by explanation of the voting behaviour. The key hypothesis is based on use of the theory of rational choice, through which it explains great changes in the voting behaviour and the organization and activities of political parties in the 60s and the 70s of the 20th century.

Did you use the saying ”don’t lose your pete”? We said it when we saw or thought that somebody yearned for something but did not dare to say so and prohibition was resolved by uttering this and offering some bits so that the person should not get embittered in his yearning. For instance, when the mother was cooking and the child was writing his homework at the table, the mother, saying these words, gave him a piece of cake still before lunch when it was otherwise forbidden to eat sweets. Or when an unexpected guest appeared and made excuses for not wanting to eat by any means saying he just stopped by on his way, and he was offered the cakes and biscuits or rather - using your favourite motive to entertain you - the fruit brandy which was always kept on store. Obviously, this ”pete” comes from appetitus, who, in my childhood, I thought to be a goblin accordingly, a small companion, who, oh, I shall not lose.

(heaven and hell) IN THE BEGINNING there was the smorgasbord. It all started with the smorgasbord breakfast, doctor, in the hotel dining room overlooking the sea. Not being able to stop eating never happened to me before that. I immediately asked if it was possible to have the smorgasbord breakfast in my room but it was said that taking food out of the dining room was not allowed but there I was FREE to eat as much as I wanted. It all started then. I ate as much as I could. Every morning, doctor, every morning.

I asked István Koncz to try to draw a picture of the era and give a diagnosis of the difficult, problematic moments of the Symposion’s history, of those circumstances that led to the suppression of particular issues of the journal in the seventies, and to the dismissal of the whole editorial staff in 1983. And I also asked him to analyse the events, the processes, what kind of logical system they followed in their structure and what kind of logical system they had in their succession. Now, years later I have to, perhaps, notice that, from the journalist’s and reporter’s point of view, I was not up to the job eleven years ago, and all this was not necessary then and the questions would not be needed today, either. They are interesting only to show the course of the dialogue.

I am sitting on the garden bench, in front of the gypsophila hedge, under the bare-necked, 100-year-old black pine trees opposite the Sandcastle. I turn my face towards the weak sun. As if I wanted to swill, to wash away the growing number of warts and the swelling pock-marks with the warm, clean light. We had the nice, complicated roof tiles of the Sandcastle replaced five years ago, but a few tiles need to be replaced again, a few tiles need to be adjusted on the steep tower, too, which I would like to have declared an ivory tower in the beginning (I put my desk right under it, de facto in the tower, etc), but then one day I noticed that sand was ticking and falling: in fact, I was sitting in a sand-clock.

In the poem series of János Sziveri two worlds - the world of the I and that of the we - are strikingly related: he creates a very strong and suggestive poetic self in his poems, for whom the writing of oneself, the ”techniques of being oneself” are more important than anything else, but not without writing ourselves: by the 20th century, however, this duality seems to be more and more anachronistic, the possibility of entwining these two roles are more and more doubtful; writing for others is gradually forced to turn into the destruction of the I and the self, supporting on behalf of the writer the paradigm of artistic impotence together with the reinterpretation of the heroism and pathos of the 19th century romantic paradigm.

Long ago I read this poem, which is waking and wakefully dedicated to A.B. Now time has come again, and soon there is an idiotic commonplace on the tip of my tongue: the commonplace saying time flies or something similar. As the other day I painfully realised how many years it is since my once restless natured friend, the poet János Sziveri, who was also born in and then moved from Voivodine and who, after his short life of vicissitudes, now rests - under a hard, massive crucifix- in the Farkasréti graveyard. ( The span on the cross: 1954-1990.)
