The study deals with not only the most obvious layer of meaning of Nabokov’s Lolita, its controversial subject of the chief protagonist, a middle-aged literature professor Humbert Humbert, becoming obsessed with a twelve-year-old girl and initiating an illicit sexual relationship with her after he becomes her stepfather; but also delves deeper into the cultural clash between the decadence of the Old World, personified in the character of the perverted and morally corrupt paedophile Humbert, and the mass consumer culture of the New World, whose triviality and a different kind of corruption are personified mostly in the character of Dolores Haze, i.e. Lolita. Through the analyses of the various scenes of the novel, it shows Humbert’s gradual change from an already corrupt Old-World paedophile, cynically critical towards the culture he is now living in and not passing up on a single opportunity to look down his nose at it, to a chimera of sorts, an amalgam, incorporating the worst flaws of both worlds, losing his old identity in the process; hence the part of the title Going from Bad to Worse. The unreliability of the narrator is also discussed in the study and, albeit briefly, the novel’s two film adaptations. Nabokov’s claim that he had no purpose in writing the novel is also addressed through the conclusion given through the words of Lionel Trilling that a creative writer cannot be trusted to say what he has done, only what he meant to do.

The purpose of this paper is to define the essential features of Irish and English characters in William Trevor’s short story collection The News from Ireland (1986). All the stories in the collection are based upon the moral, spiritual and social epiphany of characters caused by the unfortunate and tragic twists and turns of fate. By means of a mimetic literary method and a psycho-ethical portrayal, the author forges his characters on the front line of the archetypal battle between the good and the evil in man and nature, Ireland and England, the country and the city, the old-world religiousness and the new-world loss of faith. The writer abandons a wider social landscape in order to focus his attention on insignificant, isolated and alienated individuals, all of whom are simultaneously battling with the lack of meaning in life and bare survival. The startling plight of all Trevor’s antiheroes initiates their introspective evaluation until the cathartic self-awareness is achieved. The most striking character transformations occur on life’s by-paths which irreversibly lead from virtue to sin, from innocence to experience, from the collective and general to the individual and personal. The Irish characters are the antiheroes of the backward and lethargic Irish countryside, and their predicament stems from the personal fate as well as the backwardness, xenophobia, religious dogmatism (Catholic and Protestant) and chauvinism of their native environment. Conversely, the English characters are the antiheroes of a megalopolis in which people sacrifice all that is human for the relentless progress of civilization and the creation of the dehumanized society projected in Orwellian anti-utopias.

The Sarafnama of Saraf Xan (949-1009/1543-1600), prince of Bidlis, was composed in 1005-7/1596-99 and is arguably the most important work on Kurdish history. It displays an uninterrupted chain of transmission from its composition to the present time, and nearly two centuries have passed since it was "discovered" and studied by Orientalists. Still, many aspects of the Sarafnama have yet to be studied, including the work's sources and how they were utilised by Saraf Xan. This article aims to be a contribution to the study of this particular aspect, through identifying the historians who inspired Saraf Xan, and providing an analysis of his methodology and approach to the sources.

The article interprets Leśmian’s poetic figure of home. It indicates emptiness, the sense of mourning after losing oneself, but paradoxically it also denotes renewal of life energy and the source of vitality. Here the lexical items such as “strangeness”, “alienation” and “emptiness” interact to form the fundamental concept of home. The author investigates the tensions between the contradictory states of existential uncertainty and the desire to be “at home” and to belong somewhere. Finally, Leśmian’s works illustrate the conviction that in this destabilized world it is through relating to others that we find stability, if only temporarily.

In theatrical play created by Monika Strzępka and Paweł Demirski the figure of anti-hero becomes part of artistic strategy. The article examines selected performances and demonstrates how the anti-hero character is constructed. This creation involves radical redefining of certain cultural, literary and historical tropes which contemporary mass culture generates. The archetypal figure is dismantled by means of certain techniques such as deconstruction, re-codification, synthesizing the character or exposing his conventional nature. As a result of these artistic strategies the anti-hero’s identity is blurred, self-contradictory and frequently devaluated.

This paper interprets a flamenco piece The Language of Flowers first performed by Nadia Mazur’s FlamencoArte Theatre in November 2012. The article offers the reading of the F.G. Lorca’s play Doña Rosita the Spinster and shows how different aesthetic elements such as dance, singing, guitar play, theatrical signs convey artistic expression. The author attempts to evaluate the semiotic interplay of Lorca’s work and flamenco. She observes that Mazur’s choreography by no means simplifies the original text. Nor does it diminish the Andalusia of the early twentieth century in its socio-historical context. What is emphasized here is the artist’s idiosyncratic constant entanglement with flamenco. Finally, the article addresses Lorca’s own theoretical commentary.

Science fiction novels are chronologically located where multiple time references intersect. Future dominates the semantics of the novel whereas past reference organizes the grammar of the narrative. Nostalgic retrofuturism explicitly demonstrates the tensions between various time modes, and as a result it shows a vision of “the future which has never happened”.

In his article the author sketches a portrait of Geralt of Rivia, a title character of Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher series aw well as a video game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, while at the same time tracing the work of deconstruction inscribed in the figure of the hero. Most significantly, it is Geralt’s gender identity that becomes subject to deconstruction; a model of heroic, fatherly, withdrawn masculinity becomes subverted and unseamed – on the one hand by female corporality; on the other, by female politics – which results in questioning and rejecting the so far dominant model in favour of subjectivity suspended between femininity and masculinity (and their other variants).

The title of Marek Troszyński’s book Słowacki. Poza kanonem is excellent from the perspective of marketing, but at the same time, it succeeds in conveying the content of the 11 chapters of different length, supplemented with 8 interesting appendices and 65 aptly selected and described illustrations. In a way, it has a character of sylwa; its previous versions (published in refereed magazines and collective monographs) became considerably re‑edited in order to achieve the result in the form of monography. I accept the opening form of this dissertation, which is proposed by the author, as well as his affirmative attitude to the poet’s quasi‑literary achievements, which makes the author “a friendly witness” of Słowacki’s biography and writing. The work is undoubtedly original, own, exceptional and quite unique. I do not expect that in the foreseeable future we will encounter any gifted follower of the method, inquisitiveness, a highly interesting narration, and at the same time a lucky discoverer of so many philological findings, offering such a great number of the conjectures of the poems, not necessarily canonical ones, however, coming after the “canonical”, because critical, edition of Juliusz Kleiner.

The texts included in the volume deal with the issues concerning the creation and circulation of literary works in the Polish People’s Republic. The elements of a literary career, such as recognition of an author, his or her descent or pro‑state activity, are the subject of study. The authors persuade that the social position of a writer did not always correspond with the artistic value of his or her work and that it is possible to reconstruct the transformations of the cultural politics in the Polish People’s Republic on the basis of the examination of the fate of the books handed in for evaluation to the office of censorship. The analysis of the specific careers proves the thesis that literature in the communist system could not be situated outside the cultural context and the external factors had a significant impact on the final form of the work.

In 1638 dramatic idyll a male view of marriage is undermined by the voice of these women (Dafnis appears here as pars pro toto) who critically perceived a marital status as a life determined by abandoning the virtue of chastity. In Scene 13 one can already recognize – at least on a verbal level – the equal rights: Peneus’s male arguments are juxtaposed with Dafnis’s female ones. The nymph – in a prefeminist way? – juxtaposes her female subjectivity with male objectification in favour of the values which for Apollo and Peneus can be imagined at most: love for a woman and the continuity of a family (exalted by being related to a god).
