Author(s): Liudprand Liudprand of Cremona / Language(s): Bulgarian / Publication Year: 2015

This modern translation of all the surviving literary compositions ascribed to Liudprand, the bishop of Cremona from 962 to 972, offers unrivaled insight into society and culture in western Europe during the "iron century". Since Liudprand enjoyed the favor of the Saxon Roman emperor Otto the Great, and traveled to Constantinople more than once on official business, his narratives also reveal European attitudes toward the Byzantine Empire and the culture of its refined capital city. No other tenth-century writer had such privileged access to the high spheres of power, or such acerbic wit and willingness to articulate critiques of the doings of powerful people. Liudprand's historical texts (the Antapodosis on European events in the first half of the 900s, and his Historia Ottonison the rise to power of Otto the Great) provide a unique view of the recent past against a genuinely European backdrop, unusual in a time of localized cultural horizons. Liudprand's famous satirical description of his misadventures as Ottonian legate at the Byzantine court in 968 is a vital source of information on Byzantine ritual and diplomatic process, as well as a classic of medieval intercultural encounter. Readers interested in medieval European culture, the history of diplomacy, Italian and German medieval history, and the history of Byzantium will find this collection of translated texts rewarding. A full introduction and extensive notes help readers to place Liudprand's writings in context.

Author(s): Eva Kovacheva / Language(s): Bulgarian / Publication Year: 0

In the present study, there are 40 saints, whose lives describe that in their martyrdom death from the wounds of their bodies, and especially when their heads were cut off, milk was flowing instead of blood. Of the presented cases, 20 are women and 20 are men of different age. As described in the vitae, it is established that they lived between the 1-4 century, which coincided with the early Christian period, but there are also three exceptions of the martyrs of the 5th, 7th and 11th centuries. Regarding the localization of the described phenomenon, it was found that the saints originated from different geographic areas – in the East from Palestine and Tyre (present-day Lebanon), in North Africa - on the lands of today's Egypt, Tunisia and Libya, in various regions of Asia Minor, The Balkan Peninsula (particularly on the territory of today's Bulgaria and Greece) and West to Gaul (in particular Italy, France and Belgium). In general, the explanation given in the present study of the miracle of milk is that it is a sign of their holiness and their heavenly change already on the earth.

Author(s): Mariya Deyanova / Language(s): English,Bulgarian / Publication Year: 0

Several early Christian basilicas have been discovered in the region of Karlovo up to now: down the route to the Roman road Oescus-Philipopol at the Roman station Soubradice and the ancient settlement nearby the village of Hristo Danovo, on the lands of the ancient settlement nearby the village of Hristo Danovo, on the lands of the village of Voynyagovo, in the monastery complex of the Medieval stronghold Kopsis nearby the village Anevo. Another Christian church is located down the route of the Balkan Roman road from Serdica to the Black Sea on the lands of the village Iganovo nearby the late ancient settlement. On the lands of the village of Vasil Levski in a late ancient settlement an early Christian basilica - the only one in the region with baptistery and synthronon - has been studied. Religious building found had played a great role for Christianization of the local population, whereas it is suggested to be the Yoanica episcopate during VII-IX century

Author(s): Jakim Donevski / Language(s): Macedonian / Issue: 17/2019

In this paper, I will be presenting the early Christian basilicas in the region of Kratovo. In this region, there are five basilicas, and they are located in the western part of the region of Kratovo. Three of the basili¬cas are located in the village of Konjuh, and the other two in the villages Vakav and Filipovci. The basilicas in the archaeological site Golemo Gradiste at Konjuh village, probably the ancient city of Tranupara noted in IV century, were excavated during the last six decades. These basilicas are: large city basilica (intra muros), Cemetery basilica (extra muros) and martyrium rotunda (circular basilica). These basilicas are dated between the 4th and the 6th century. The researcher A. Keramitciev discovered the rest of the basilicas during the last century. Probably those basilicas are from the same period like the basilicas in the village of Konjuh. In this paper, the accent will be on the other two unknown basilicas, one located in the archaeological site Cukarka at Vakav village and the other at the archaeological site St. Ilija in the Filipovci village.

Author(s): Valeria Fol / Language(s): Bulgarian / Issue: 22/2017

The paper analyses the written sources and the hypotheses expressed in favour or against a developed cult of Rhesos as a hero. The evidence on Rhesos shapes three images, each with its specificities. The idea of the Hero in Hellas and its “encounter” with the notion of the Thracians of the heroic are examined. Some authors accept that the image of Rhesos belonged to the Achaean mythological cycle. Most Bulgarian authors prefer the opinion expressed 100 years ago by W. Leaf, based on Cicero’s evidence (Cic. De natura deorum III, 45) that the tragedy Rhesos was born from poetic fancy, which is seriously criticised in Western specialised literature. The evidence shows that the socium in the region of the Rhodope Mountains overcame the conflict between the disappearance and the preservation of the cultural memory, and the defining of yesterday and today through a folklore narrative and rites connected with the image of the Horseman Hero, probably Rhesos. In the different cultures – of polis and ethnos types – the individual who had passed “beyond” can become unforgettable and divine protector of the socium in different ways, Euripides (Eur. Rhes.) and Philostratus sensed the different notion and understanding of a divine protector among the Thracians, which led to the confusing use of theos, heros and anthropodaimon, which is confusing to us, as the authors have tried to come maximally close to the way of thinking of the bearers of the faith-ritual related to Rhesos, i.e., to the Thracian world outlook and way of preservation of the cultural memory. The reference to Rhesos as anthropodaimon, daimon and heros can also be interpreted as defining of different recognised ideas in the “culture of death” of the Thracian aristocratic faith-ritual whose aim is the immortalisation and the preservation of the link with the deceased who had gone to the World Beyond, profanated and rendered as folklore during the Late Antiquity.

Author(s): Mirko Barjaktarovic / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 1/2004

A separate ethnic group living in an isolated settlement could preserve ethnic identity even when surrounded by an alien ethnic environment. This is even more likely to happen if the ethnic group in question has a different religious affiliation than the rest, since the religious affiliation and ethnicity were often equated in the area examined. This paper presents a few cases of ethnicity preservation (sometimes its loss), namely: (1.) The Sarakačans group (a Greek speaking ancient Balkan population); that is, its lineage Ašana in Goč (nearby Kraljevo); (2.) Serbs in White Krajina (Slovenia) and Zumberka (Croatia); (3.) Serbs from former Montenegro settled in the village of Peroj, in Istria; (4.) Catholic Albanians, tribe Klimenti, settled in Srem’ villages Nikinci, Hrtkovci and Jarak, who declare themselves to be Croatians today; (5.) A Serbian population from Montenegro and parts of Herzegovina (various tribes from Ceklina, Bjelopavlić, Riječka nahija, Njeguš, Grahovo and Zubac), from Petlovo Selo, in northeast Serbia; (6.) Torbeša families, from the group Mijaka, an originally Slav-Islamic population in the Cmi Drim area, that immigrated in the 1960’s to Izmir, in Turkey; (7.). Janjevci, Catholics of a mixed Slavic origin, from Janjevo, near Pristina; in the past they declared themselves natives of Dubrovnik, but lately declared themselves Croatians; (8.). Slovak Adventists from Gospodjinci, in Srem, who declare themselves to be Serbs; and (9.). Slovaks, Greco-Catholic, from Kučura, Bačka, who declare themselves as Ruthenians although their native language is Slovakian. In conclusion, the author argues that ethnic identity preservation depends on a lot of factors and circumstances, among which the most important are settlement and religious affiliation. Many of the positive experiences of multilingual, multinational and multireligious tolerances in the area could serve as a model in other potentially troubled multicultural environments.

Author(s): Vesna Trifunovic / Language(s): Serbian / Issue: 133/2010

The paper stresses how important it is to adapt subject content in formal school (primary school, primarily) to meet the needs of social and cultural development. Effective primary school teaching contributes to cultural development by spreading and ac¬cepting a cultural model and by strengthening the national and cultural identity.Following the logic of new political reality and new landmarks of social develop¬ment, the Serbian society is trying to find the answers to the following questions: first, how to use tradition in transition process and change the quality of relationship to tradition; second, how to bridge the gap between national culture, on the one hand, and universal cultural patterns, on the other? Religious education can greatly contribute to strengthening the national and cultural identity, owing to particular values it carries. The paper stresses the possibility of creating identity (national and cultural) in the conditions characterized by the crisis of identity in the globalizing society.

Author(s): Stanislav Boyanov / Language(s): English,Bulgarian / Publication Year: 0

Eastern Roumelia received its fundamental law drafted by a specially European commission. It is quite a detailed document providing for all aspects of life of the Roumeli citizens. The Organic Statute of Eastern Roumelia defined the new political formation in the Balkans as a state of modern (for that time) bourgeois-liberal type. It had all the features of and independant state: its own government, a representative authority elected by the people and a national army. The sovereignty of the sultan was included in the Statute, but thanks to the efforts of Eastern Roumeli political figures, it soon became nominal, without any serious power in the region. Unlike the neighboring countries (the Ottoman Empire, the Principality of Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece and Romania) there was no legalized and preferred religion in Eastern Roumelia. All religious issues were placed in the hands of the religious communities and the state did not involve itself with them. The only condition was that they should not violate any of the laws valid to the region.

Author(s): K.M. Tovbin / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 5-6/2015

On the basis of the methodology of the traditionalist school the author analyzes the religious component of Sakhalin mentality. The confessions, composing the spiritual field of Sakhalin region, for convenience can be divided into traditional, traditionally-oriented and innovatory (in their turn they can be divided into modernist and post-modernist). The traditional confessions realize mental penetration into the living environment. The modernist ones, on the other hand, have a propensity to escaping from this penetration; the post-modernist confessions move to the virtual space rich in an illusory semiotic content substituting the ontological analogs. The Sakhalin religious organizations are approximately divided into these categories. On the base of this classification, generalizing his own experience of theoretical and practical studies, the author builds a specific vision of Sakhalin mentality and concludes about the spiritual condition and the possibilities of the future development of Sakhalin.

Author(s): Aleftina Yuryevna Chernysheva / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 5/2014

The article describes the divergent religious and secular speech-behavioral tactics of denunciation of a delict (pride, idolatry, false interpretation of human rights) in the teachings of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill. It is proved that the discrepancy in the tactics in secular and religious cultures is determined by the “religious and moral indifferentism” supported by the influence of the Western ultra-liberal standard.

Author(s): Aliaksandr Veliseichyk / Language(s): Russian / Issue: 18/2016

The end of the twentieth century is marked by the emergence of a particular discourse of historical memory in the context of national identity, and the emergence of a new epistemology, which was indicated by such concepts as “historical repentance” and “post-Soviet society,” and relativization of the concepts such as “truth” and “reality.” The aim of this paper is to identify historical memory as a memory of the historical path of the Belarusian people, to show the positive and negative aspects of the history of this nation during the Great Patriotic War, and to show the role of the Orthodox Church in Belarus in 1941-1945. This topic still requires further research.

Author(s): András Csepregi / Language(s): Russian / Publication Year: 0

Compared to other European countries, contemporary Hungary can be considered as a moderately secularized society. Its religious life is livelier than that of the majority of Western and Northern European countries, but less intensive than that of its Central and Eastern European neighbours. However, in this glass which is half empty and half full, a uniquely colourful religious life can be found. Besides the Catholic church, which comprises two-thirds of religious people, practically all protestant and neo- protestant denominations exist, as well as older and more recent charismatic communities, ethnically based, larger and smaller orthodox church-groups, four different traditions within Judaism, muslim communities, followers of various Buddhist traditions, believers of Krishna-consciousness, and numerous circles experimenting with ancient or newer religious practices.

Author(s): Petar Gramatikoff / Language(s): Bulgarian / Publication Year: 0

Modern times are characterized by the rediscovery of religion as a factor in human life. Many different forms of religiosity are updated, revive and thrive. This return to religion, however, not only has a positive effect. Modern religious reality is multifaceted and reveals both the best and the worst of human nature. New religious movements and their invasion and expansion are probably one of the most surprising events of the twentieth century and early twenty-first century and the third millennium. For the last three or four generations the new religious movements are deployed in multinational and global scale and have become significant cultural, social, religious and political factors. The paper makes analyses of contemporary challenges before the humanity from the point of view of the influence of regions and poses some significant questions to future sustainable development. The paper includes as a supplement “Common ground and differences of view between the Bretton Woods institutions (World Bank and IMF) and the World Council of Churches (WCC)” - translated in Bulgarian summary of the current situation of the discussions between the management of the Bretton Woods Institutions (BW Institutions) and the WCC facing what has been identified as a common basis and (in brackets) differences in viewpoints. The study reflects the "work in progress" in the ongoing dialogue between the three organizations. Central to the common ground is the clarification of common concern on the fight against poverty - an important task of the dialogue between institutions and BW-WCC is the need to increase the effectiveness of the efforts to reduce poverty.
