The article deals with the Christian understanding of health. The first part of the article points to the basics of the biblical understanding of health with the emphasis on the New Testament perspective. It is followed by a theological-anthropological reflection according to which the theological understanding of man is taken as the point of reference for the Christian understanding of health. Here, the particular Christian understanding of man is emphasised in his initial and final theological determination. In accordance with that, man’s health is observed in its eschatological perspective as a continuous process that involves both man’s earthly and final determination. Hereby the concept of health comes very close to the Christian notion of salvation. In the light of these postulations, the final part of the article examines the actuality of the Christian approach to health, in the context of a comprehensive approach to health, the negative influence of sin, the social responsibility and the therapeutic mission of the Church.

Eucological texts of the Spanish-Mozarabic Rite contain many interesting anthropological insights which are the result of historical circumstances in which liturgy took shape on the Iberian Peninsula (discussions with Arianism, Adaptionism or Priscilianism). The article consists of two parts: the frst one examines the texts from the Mass for the beginning of the year (in initio anni) in the Spanish rite, which brings out the cronosophical framework of reflection on man in his dynamics of becoming and his greatest aspirations. The second part is devoted to the Mozarabic understanding of human nature and its relation to God’s grace, corporality and spirituality in order to focus on some anthropological categories, such as affectio, devotio or vota, around which individual and communal anthropology of the Spanish rite is grounded.

In South Bulgaria, close to nowadays’ cities of Pazardzhik and Plovdiv, lies the village of Patalenitsa. The Church of Saint Demetrios has remained from Byzantine times. Its plan is of the cross-in-square type. In 2011–2012 the last phase of the restoration of the medieval mural paintings in the church was carried out. The preserved fragments on the westerns side of the eastern piers located under the cupola, amongst which probably passed the templon of the medieval church, are valuable for the identification of the saint patron. The images of the Virgin with the Child and an unknown saint in a rectangle frame are depicted on the north pillar, while St Demetrios is depicted on the south pillar. The iconography of St Demetrios in the Patalenitsa Church is significantly different from the well-known iconography of the saint with a short hairstyle. In Patalenitsa he is depicted with medium-length hair, separated in two locks. A number of early examples show that this iconographic variation exists in parallel with the well-known iconography of the saint, depicting him with a short hairstyle, but all the examples, depicting St Demetrios with locks date from the end of the 10th and the whole 11th century to the beginning of the 12th century at latest. We are not talking about a regional phenomenon, but maybe about a decision of the capital, as St Demetrios is depicted in the observed iconographic version also in the famous miniature with the portrait of Emperor Basil II in the Psalter, today in the Marciana Library, Venice (cod. Marc. gr. 17, f. IIIr). The above-mentioned gives us a reason to suggest that the murals in the Patalenitsa Church reflect precisely the commented iconographic variation of St Demetrios and this iconographic particularity suggests a date from the 11th century to the very beginning of the next century and not later. The identification of St Demetrios on the pillar under the cupola justifies the assumption that the medieval church was dedicated to the Thessaloniki martyr.

The article provides an overview of a nine year research eff ort focusing on current English and Transylvanian Unitarian practices of funeral rituals. Paul Tillich’s (1886–1965) method of correlation, together with John Creswell's mixed methods approach, gives the methodological background for the study’s rationale. The research included interviews of lay people and ministers of different educational backgrounds talking about funerals which were important and meaningful to them. The article was derived from transcripts of the interviews as well as the author’s notes and observations about the participants’ reflections on funeral occasions. The participants have been given pseudonyms for ethical considerations and have provided their written consent. This article proposes that theological enquiry should be present in actual church practice. This aim is approached here within the contextual interpretation of elements of personal identity reflected in the funeral practice. The two main important elements of identity hybridity and images of God are interpreted in the funeral ritual as conceived in the language of the church. The article concludes that hybridity is an important element of the Unitarian identity. The concept of God is amorphous and evolving which adds weight to the hypothesis that funeral as ritual is losing its transitional character, and that gaps are emerging in the fabric of the ritual. These gaps, further complicated by individuals’ subjective interpretations of death, God, and identity, significantly diminish the effectiveness of funeral rituals as aids to personal transition.

In this paper, which is a edited version of a short lecture, we discuss some existential questions of the Transylvanian Reformed Church. Our primary aim is to confute the upsetting statement made by Sándor Makkai, the former bishop of Transylvanian Reformed Church, in 1937, namely that it is morally impossible to live in minority, since the minority life is entirely opposite to human dignity.

Hieronimus of Strydon takes on the defence of the virginity of Virgin Mary because of Jesus Christ. He recognizes ascetic life run in the desert conditions as the most perfect way of imitating our Saviour. According to Hieronymus, in this way of implementation of Christian vocation most important thing is virginity. He wrote on this in his works. In one of his writtings, aimed against Helvidius, he defends the virginity of Virgin Mary. He believes that she implements this ideal of Christian life in a perfect way. The defence and the same time an apology of Christianity, which means also veneration of the Mother of Jesus, allow us to learn of his linguistic, exegetic skills and mostly of his knowledge of the Bible. Apart from that the most frequently undertaken theological questions are, sometimes quite turbulent, arguments on the virginity of Virgin Mary.

The article analyzes the encyclical Humanae vitae with the help of the factors of revealed morality contained in the document of the Pontifical Biblical Commission The Bible and the morality. Biblical roots of Christian conduct. These include: the structure of revealed morality: the gift-response/task/law, the gift of creation, the gift of the Covenant, the gift of forgiveness and the final goal. And also the methodological criteria guaranteeing the biblical correctness of moral reflection: two fundamental criteria (conformity with the biblical view of human nature and conformity with the example of Jesus), and six specific ones (convergence, contrast, advance, community dimension, finality and discernment). The analysis serves to define the relation of Humanae vitae to revealed morality and it is the theological re-reading of the encyclical, asking the question about its theological and moral truth.

Every liturgy grows. The liturgy of the Order of Preachers was no exception. In the 1200s, the friars faced the necessity to revise their customs, texts, and rituals. On the one hand, this situation shows how diverse the 13th-century Christianitas was, and on the other hand, it proved the presence of a desire for unity within the newly formed Order, a struggle to have all the members of the then-worldwide community pray according to the same form. The process leading to that “liturgical consensus” needed by the Preachers back in the 1200s resembles the axioms of the liturgical renewal in the 20th century. The article focuses on the history of the Dominican liturgical developments, highlighting the mindset of the 13th-century Friars Preachers facing changes in the area of prayer. In the context of debates surrounding the liturgy after Vatican II, the author provides a historical perspective in order to show similarities between both processes of liturgical renewal.
