The Middle East occupies considerable space in the US media and public debate after America’s recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. This paper examines Phil Klay’sdelineation of these wars in his award winning story collection, Redeployment (in accordance with its approach to the value of life of both Americans and nonAmericans and its perspective(s) on violence. It is Judith Butler’s contention that, inWestern democracies, lives and deaths are treated with a different method; while thelives of western citizens are valued and grieved, the lives of non citizens are devaluedand ungrieved. I investigate the status of life/death in this work in the first sectionwhile the stories’ appropriation(s) to and justifi cation of violence are elaborated in thesecond part. In these stories, fatalities among both Americans and locals are abundantand grief appears to dominate the scenes, however, in rather different way.

Written in Gaul in late 7th century by an unknown author, Visio Baronti presents the journey to the afterlife of a monk’s soul from the perspective of what happens with the soul right after exiting the body. A founding text of the medieval literary (sub)genre visiones animarum, the work has been analysed not only from this perspective, but also as a narrative meant to sort out – from the standpoint of Christian doctrine – the “geography” of the afterlife and the theological beliefs of the period. My intention is to analyse the way in which the author of the text represents particular judgment – which, according to Christian teachings, occurs right after the separation of the soul from the body – and to identify a series of connections between this narrative and its possible sources pertaining to Latin or Greek patristic writings.

Zagrlili smo se. Nisam ga video godinama, zadnji put još pre Vladisavljevog pohoda na Drač, kada smo čekali vesti od gospodara Dragomuža, te sam tada odmah iskoristio vreme da odem do manastira. Još pamtim neke reči koje mi je Simeon tada rekao, odkako sam mu ispričao kakve me nevolje snalaze – "vremena su loša, neizvesno je koliko će još država da izdrži protiv vasilevsa, moja žena Marija je pred drugim porođajem, a moj brat, iako dvanaest godina mlađi, ne podnosi moje tutorstvo..."

Short story written by Marjan Čakarević: Ruke. Vrtlog. [...] [...]
