Idioms are metaphorical expressions that cannot be translated literally. They are widely used in English because they make everyday speech more interesting and entertaining for native speakers. It is assumed that there are about twenty-five thousand idiomatic expressions in English and one of the most common thematic areas for idioms is colour. Idiomatic expressions are a fun way to enhance the vocabulary and cultural knowledge of learners of English. However, mastering these expressions cause difficulties for students not only because their meaning is not deductible from the meanings of the words comprising it, but also due to the different meaning of colours in the cultures around the world. For instance, purple is usually connected with aristocracy, affluence, and piousness across the globe but in Thailand and Brazil it is the colour of bereavement. In this article we have described an approach to check the acquisition of idiomatic expressions and facilitate their long-term retention by using online practice tests. These tests are designed by the teacher and taken by students on their personal computers or mobile phones at their own convenience. Furthermore, specifically developed criteria for test construction are listed together with typical test questions based on them. Examples of test items are presented to illustrate the process of test creation. Finally, an appendix of a selection of the most widely used idiomatic expressions with colours is compiled.

The membership of the Romanian Orthodox Church in the World Council of Churches as of 1961 favoured the articulation of an ecclesiastical diplomacy that often accompanied Nicolae Ceausescu’s maverick foreign policy. This church diplomacy also integrated priest-teachers that had been political detainees. Late in the ‘70s, there occurred a rise in the number of those who refused to collaborate with the communist regime. Father Gheorghe Calciu-Dumitreasa, imprisoned between 1979 and 1984, and the priests who taught at the Theological Institute of Alba Iulia were among the opponents of the regime that the Securitate kept under scrutiny and incriminated.

The objective of our paper is to bring to light some changes that took place in the field of education in South Korea in the recent past, starting from the assumption that the rapid development of this country was triggered, among other factors, by an increased interest in education. To this aim, we have administered an online questionnaire containing some questions meant to offer us socio-demographic data concerning our respondents, followed by 10 scaled questions(or “opinionaires”, because “[t]hese are often used to elicit opinions rather than facts” - McDonough & McDonough,1997:176) focused on education. We obtained information from 322 respondents of various ages, levels of education, and professions. The data have been statistically analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 23.0); we also conducted frequency and cross analysis, as well as a t-test considering the gender, age, as well as the level of education of the respondents. The general results indicate that the Korean subjects are aware of the changes concerning various aspects related to education, such as the equal treatment of children with different social backgrounds, the evaluation of teachers by students, to mention just a few, and that most of these changes have been for the better, but at the same time that there are also differences in their opinions depending especially on the respondent’s age.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Romania had become an important state in Europe and the Great Powers wanted it on their side. World War I strongly influenced Romania‟s geo-political status as the year 1918 marked the forging of the unified nation-state, after the unification of the Romanian provinces. The most important goal of all Romanians had been achieved. After 1918, the economy began to rapidly develop due to the social reforms taking place immediately after the war. One of the factors contributing to the modernization was the implication in the political life. The former governments in the provinces were replaced by a fully Romanian government, which resulted in an increased number of Romanian officials. In urban areas, occupations became more diverse. Education and culture developed due to the interest for culture. Cities expanded significantly. The living conditions in rural areas enhanced a lot. As far as leisure time was concerned, besides the interest for social life, the Romanians became attracted by other ways of spending their free time. Due to those changes, the level of civilization of the Romanians had so much increased that it could be compared, under certain aspects, to that in Europe‟s developed states.

The article addresses the development of curricula for German study programs in Central Eastern European Countries over the past 70 years, from the post-war period to the present. These are shaped by social framework conditions and historical factors, such as the end of the war in 1945, and the years directly following, membership of the so-called communist Eastern Bloc, and membership in the EU in 2004 and 2007. The political changes of 1989/1990 marked one of the most important milestones; a period began in which western languages including the German language flourished in German departments; only with demographic change has enrolment dropped rapidly since the turn of the millennium. Already in the first decade of reunification, German institutes “lost” their graduates to careers that were not oriented towards the humanities, a phenomenon dominated by international companies with business contacts in German-speaking countries. Today, the majority of universities and German studies institutes are reacting to the pragmatic demands of the labor market and are modifying their range of courses, even if this is at the expense of traditional curricular content.
