For the last five years I have devoted exactly half my income and a substantially larger portion of my time and energy to my foundation network, which now covers 27 countries in the former Soviet empire and two outside: South Africa and Haiti. I did so not because I am a particularly charitable person but because there was something very important at stake. The collapse of the Soviet empire was a historic event. What kind of social organization would take its place would determine the shape of the world for many years to come. Communism had tried to form a universal closed society. Now that it had failed, it was possible to create a universal open society.

Ostvarenje realne konvergencije ovih zemalja zahtijeva provedbu temeljitih i dubokih gospodarskih i političkih reformi. Svrha istraživanja provedenog u radu je pobliže objasniti pojam realne konvergencije, prikazati kretanje ključnih makroekonomskih pokazatelja u Bosni i Hercegovini i ostalim zemljama regije te identificirati potencijalne učinke članstva u EU na smanjenje razvojnih razlika.

If the Western world wants to bridge the gulf that separates it from Central and Eastern Europe, it will have to know more of these regions’ history, a subject of which the average British and American student is blissfully ignorant. Theodore Roosevelt’s observation, penned by way of introducing a book on a critical episode of Hungarian history in 1913— the last year this century that anyone could think of peace as being the natural condition of Europe—is as relevant today as it was over eighty years ago. Indeed, the more talk there is of European unity, the more imperative it seems for people to be made aware of how far Hungarian history has always been an organic part of the story of Europe, and conversely, how consistently Europe has shaped Hungary over the centuries. “Europe” has never stood for just another continent; but whatever its connotation throughout the ages, Europe always defined itself as including the central and eastern parts of the expanse stretching from the Atlantic to the Urals, in sum, as including Hungary.

In this paper, the author presents and argues the thesis that Thomas Piketty’s fiscal solution to social inequality, presented in the book Capital of the 21st Century, is primarily the result of worldviews of the author of the book, and only to a lesser extent the result of the economical and statistical analysis of a large number of data series, which makes this book extremely important in the professional community. In addition, the author provides a number of possible different (and even opposite) solution models that would, in the context of Piketty’s arguments presented in the book, have the same effect, but would approach the social reality in a very different way. Finally, the author finds that the wealth of options that can be accessed on the topic of social inequality is the indication of its relevance.

Breastfeeding provides good-quality nutrition for babies and can be very beneficial for both mom and baby. However, modern women face many challenges in breastfeeding their babies that can be attributed to today’s ever-evolving cultural and psycho-social underpinnings. These multiple barriers to breastfeeding in today’s society hinder women from developing a good breastfeeding relationship with their babies. The various factors that prohibit initiation and prolonged breastfeeding however can be counteracted by examining the barriers to breastfeeding and finding reasonable methods for resolving the challenges. Twenty-first century women who desire to breastfeed can be successful at achieving their breastfeeding goals with greater support by society and by having more confidence in themselves.

Building on Moje et al and Dyson’s work within a Bakhtinian framework of dialogism and ethics of answerability, the paper argues the need for a critical humanities educator to create dialogic learning spaces within classrooms that would be engaging for students and where students would be encouraged to draw from their various ‘funds of knowledge’ in order to connect their ‘school-world’ with their other social worlds. The paper points out the interconnected nature of our knowing-in-the-world and suggests that all teachers, but especially teachers of critical humanities or social sciences adopt an adda-based pedagogy through a permeable curriculum for promoting wholesome, student-cantered learning in colleges and universities that would harness students’ various ‘funds of knowledge’ both in and outside classrooms. The paper argues that even though the use of adda in the classroom, like other similarly negotiated curricula, does generate some challenges for educators, yet the benefits of using an adda-based pedagogy in the classroom far out-weigh its disadvantages in the creation of a democratic, equitable and engaging learning environment in classrooms.

As a consequence of globalization human life is subjected to many mechanisms that go along with it for example homogenization, culture diffusion, consumptionism, relativism and constant change, which lead to unreflectiveness affecting all aspects of human life. A human being exists in a common reality in accordance to a very flexible scenario, without much thought about the sense of existence. This situation reflects on education, which should concentrate on efficent spreading of knowledge and skills necessary to live in current conditions, which are a source of many chances but also dangers. Those changes can’t be analyzed without taking markets into consideration, understood as having and usefulness. Those trends cause the „production” of alumni that are very efficient from an economical point of view and oriented on self realization, but aren’t oriented on reflective exploration of the world. This situation results in comparing humans to machines and in an obsessive want of getting a diploma which certifies obtaining education understood as a commodity. This in turn is an incentive to reflect upon the foundations of education a process that is the most important investment in the development of human capital.
