I dedicate this essay to my good friend and longtime colleague at Indiana University, Ilhan Basgoz. I have learned much from Ilhan, an astute student of culture, in particular, of narratives and the ways they shape people’s understandings of the world. I believe that the theme I develop in this essay, having to do with stories and systems of belief in an Andean society where I had the privilege to do ethnographic research, owes much to Ilhan’s influence on my thinking and scholarship.

This study describes causes, processes and results of migration and illuminates the influence of cultural dimensions. Migration is a phenomenon that plays an important role in the life of both individuals and society. For the Turks, migration has also another significance; one of their oldest epic is the migration epic describing their migration from Central Asia-Khorasan to Anatolia. However, this settled life is still semi nomadic. With the expansion of the Ottoman Empire, Turkish migration continued towards the Balkan. In the late 18th century, a migration process appeared from Crimea, Crete, Macedonia and the Caucasus to Anatolia. In the 1950s, seasonal workers from poor regions of Anatolia settled in Cukurova and an internal migration process to Istanbul started. In the 1960s, the guest workers’ movement to various European countries occurred. Due to its geographical location, Turkey functions as a bridge connecting East and West. Immigration is an important subject of Turkish epics and folk stories and expressions in the context of the migration concept take an important place in the Turkish vocabulary. The most important characteristic of Turkish migration is the fact that it is unplanned. A wellknown Turkish proverb says: ‘The caravan organises itself on the road’. Migration provides bitterness, pain and sorrow, but these negative impacts can transfer into peace, joy and happiness. Such as life, migration enquires a great deal of effort and necessary tension. In case of mutual endeavour of both the individual and society, migration has the potential to be successfully and of added value.

Unboxing old boxes buried in my upstairs closet I finally found the one marked “Turkey” and started flipping through the many photographs. The Ankara of shopping malls and democratic protests; the bus trips to yayla festivals in eastern Turkey; a tea shop in remote Tunceli; and the pilgrimage to Hajibektash (Hacıbektaş). These images spanned such a variety of culture, from Istanbul to Olympos, Gallipoli (Gelibolu) to the Black Sea (Karadeniz), veiled and unveiled. Yet a common thread that pulled together the rich diverse patterns of Turkey included not only the carpets and tea shops, but in particular the music that touched every scene, and every generation.

This study problematizes how representations and traditions relate to identity with a particular focus on Afro-Turks. Analyzing identity along with representation and tradition, this study traces the history of slavery while constructing the bonds of Afro-Turk community’s past and present. Drawing on a one-year ethnographic research based on participant observation and in-depth interviews conducted in Hasköy, Yeniçiftlik and Çırpı villages of İzmir, which culminated in a master’s thesis, the present work questions the discrimination in representations, examines the historical relationship between the African diaspora and slavery, and explores changes in community’s traditions. Given the fact that and community-specifc traditions faded away, not a uniting ethno-cultural identity but kinship relations laden with the symbolic meaning of skin colour have attained a determining role in the process of identity construction among Afro-Turks. It is argued that the etnho-cultural identity of Afro-Turks has been (re)constructed and by the African Culture, Solidarity and Cooperation Association’s mission of revitalizing traditions and collective memory.

Birthday photographing is a modern tradition that attached to birthday ritual, and considered within the family photograph type. In this article, seven photos of birthday celebrations from first half of 1960s and 1990s that they are belong to same family’ four children from two different generations, are examined. And problem is why birthday photos of different persons from different ages have similar frames. The photos are analyzed by Panofsky’s iconographic and iconological methods. However, a perspective formed by the main questions and terms of anthropology is used while analyzing photographs. The owner of the photos is Mustafa Muhtar Kutlu, whose biography was recorded orally. Therefore, the meaning of the photographs, the personal experiences and authenticities hidden in the photographs are revealed through the biography of the owner of the photographs. In the article, it is claimed that practiced three patterns creates the similar frames. One of these patterns is schemata which uses portrait art and also folk art. The other two patterns are created by ritual and family image that these are reasons of the taking the photographs. Although these three patterns make the photos understandable at first glance, they are not the only factor that determines their value. The creativity of the eye that shoot the photographs and a bit of luck are elements that make the photos aesthetically unique. Semantic value is related to both the ethnographic characteristics of the images reflected by the photographs and the memories that the owners fit them.

Since ancient times, hunger, drought, animosity or the search for better education caused people to leave their lands and go to other places or other countries. Inevitably, these types of moves bring the phenomenon of culture to the fore. This article discusses how the Zaza /Alevi born Dutch writer Murat Işık, who witnessed emigration from Turkey to The Netherlands, deals with the factors of internal migration in his novel Verloren Grond (Lost Ground), which bears traces of his family’s biography. In the work, migration of the Uslu family brings to the agenda feelings, hopes and disappointments of family members. The novel is examined with the aid of both the push-pull model of migration and pushing and pulling factors leading to migration. The most important pushing factor in the novel is the father’s leg amputation. The ground inherited from his father is thought to be the only pulling factor for the family because it will provide them with economic salvation. The phenomenon of land is very important for human beings because it represents ancestral heritage, belongingness, identity and freedom. The second important pushing factor is an earthquake, which triggers the idea of going to the big city as a pulling factor. After the migrations, the members of the family experience various types of social and cultural adaptation problems. Thus, through the novel we realize that the phenomena of migration are economically, socially and culturally important for the Uslu family, and consequently have positive and negative results for each individual.

The first short films from the Allegro Polish Legends series attracted great popularity. Further productions were created on the wave of this trend – short films, audiobooks and music videos. A feature film was also announced. The Legends are a unique narrative in Polish popular culture, not only because of the circumstances of its creation, but also the manner of its execution, distribution and the subject matter. In the article, I analyse this popular series, judging whether it can be considered a transmedia narrative. Firstly, I reflect on concepts such as an entertainment supersystem, a universe, a narrative and a transmedia story. Secondly, I relate these concepts to The Legends in an attempt to ascertain their applicability in an analysis of the series. I also reflect on the current situation of the franchise, as well as its potential and development prospects.

After the came from their homeland Caucasus, Uzunyayla villages hosted the ancient Caucasian culture for almost 100 years, as long as there was internal migration from the village to the city. The villages have kept the memory spaces, which have established connections with the Caucasus for many years, to remain alive, thanks to platforms like “vorşer”, “haçeş”, funerals and weddings. However, the internal migration process that started with mechanization in agriculture in the 1950s accelerated over time and today the villages have reached the discharge point. Migration from the village to the city, which takes place for different reasons such as providing a better life for children through education and dividing the land through inheritance, has led to the breaking of the large family structure, the acceleration of the process leading to the loss of language, mobile education and the loss of memory spaces. In this article, which we will try to describe the historical sites of “Çörümşek” and “Uzunyayla” under the name of “Uzunyayla” as culturally, we will try to explain the sites, sites, and photographs in the villages; we will examine the effects of internal migration on memory spaces through the questions we asked to the source people during our field studies in “Uzunyayla” villages in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

It is observed that Turks, who have a nomadic lifestyle, have been living in cooperation with nature throughout history, have a life struggle with animals that are their main source of livelihood, and share the common living space especially with the animals they domesticate. This proximity is reflected in the vocabulary; words, phrases, proverbs and figurative phrases about animals are embodied in the language. These language elements, many of which are not available in standard language today, are frequently found in the dialects of rural areas. Due to the changing life conditions, it is seen that migration from the village to the city centre intensifies and the way of life differs. The decrease in the connection with nature and living creatures in the nature, the change of the livelihood, caused that people who meet their needs in harmony with nature to move away from nature and animals due to urbanization. This divergence resulting from the changing lifestyle has also manifested itself in language and has led to a reduction in the diversity of concepts, especially animals, and thus conceptual blunting. In this study, the concepts about animals, which the local people are in close contact with, in the dialect of Sofçular Village, Araç, Kastamonu were compiled. In addition, the current situations of these concepts, which have become standard due to migrations from the village to the city centre, the changing living conditions and the culture are emphasized. The termination of the use of these words due to urbanization and compensating these words with other words is the subject of this study.
