Łemkowie i Łemkowszczyzna w międzywojniu

The author presents assumptions of Ukrainian nationalism in interwar period as well as its influence and ways of agitation among Lemkos. He introduces main thesis of the most important ideologist of Ukrainian nationalism Dmytro Doncov. Sprawozdania z życia mniejszości (Reports of minority living) found in the Library of Central Archives Ministry of the Interior are the main source of his analysis. The sources present extensive propagation campaigns led by both Greek-Catholic Church, Proswita, UNDO and other Ukrainian organizations. It seems that after all Lemkos didn’t accept Ukrainian national sense.

The article reveals short biographies of adjutants Pranas Tamašauskas, Aloyzas Valušis, Tadas Šakmanas, Vaclovas Šliogeris, Stepas Žukaitis and Jonas Mikaliūnas, their duties and the relationship with the President. The article is based on historical documents, historiography, published memoirs of adjutant Vaclovas Šliogeris and other materials.

Tragiškiausias XX amžiaus Lietuvos valstybei laikotarpis: 1938–1940 metai pulkininko Kazio Griniaus raštuose

Lietuvos valstybė savo istorijoje patyrė begalę išbandymų, kurių dalis lėmė tragišką valstybės ir tautos likimą. Vienas iš skausmingiausių smūgių buvo suduotas XX a. pirmosios pusės pabaigoje. Moderni Lietuvos Respublika (1918–1940 m.), susikūrusi po daugiau kaip šimto metų priklausomybės nuo carinės Rusijos, kaip ir kaimynės Latvija bei Estija, neišgyveno daugiau kaip 20 metų. Lietuvos valstybės, paskelbtos vasario 16-ąją, naikinimas prasidėjo 1938 m. kovo 17 d. Lenkijos ultimatumu, buvo pratęstas Vokietijos 1939 m. kovo 22 d. pareikalavimu atsisakyti Klaipėdos krašto ir uosto bei pagaliau apvainikuotas bolševikinės Tarybų Sąjungos 1940 m. birželio 15 d. okupacija ir 1940 m. rugpjūčio 3 d. aneksija.

Randomly discovered memories of Julius J. Bielskis, former Honorary Consul General of Lithuania in Los Angeles, about the little-known American Lithuanian Balys Pranas Mastauskas/Frank Mast (1889–1961) enabled them to be published by brieﬂy presenting this active character. His greatest contribution was from 1918 to 1919, seeking recognition of the Lithuanian state in Washington and Paris, working in Switzerland. From 1919 to 1923 he assisted Lithuanian representatives in the USA. Has had extensive contacts in US political circles. Later, while living in Chicago, he was an active expatriate, attorney and lecturer at Loyola University. Belonging to the Lithuanian Catholic ideological group in the United States, he was close to the Lithuanian politicians for Christian democrats, and was more bold in criticizing the politicians of other currents, especially nationalists. J. J. Bielskis records, brieﬂy, the major achievements of B. P. Mastauskas in political-social activities, reveals his character, his personal traits, his talent for connecting with people in need, and points out that Mastauskas was honest, dutiful and hard-working. Mr. Bielskis did not question his patriotism.

Četiri pisma Mate Lovraka iz 1926. godine

The author brings transcripts of four letters that Mato Lovrak, the then head teacher of schools in Veliki Grđevac and Veliki Zdenci and a member of the Ilovo Teachers ‘Association, sent to the headquarters of the Yugoslav Teachers’ Association in Belgrade during 1926. In them Lovrak talks about the difficulties in which he found himself due to a change in political circumstances in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. The transcript of the letters was accompanied by a brief introduction in which the general circumstances in which Lovrak wrote the letters in question were given as well as additional explanations.

The territorial ideology related to Romania’s border with Hungary played a significant role in forging the national narrative of the Romanian state-building process. In order to enrich a still underdeveloped scholarship on Romanian borders and borderlands, the following article examines how geography and maps are used by interwar Romanian geographers and cartographers in order to legitimize the Western border and to invent it as a marker of territorial sovereignty. More precisely, I argue that the Romanian-Hungarian borderland was ideologically and socially constructed as a distinct geopolitical region through various practices of geographical nationalism. By exploring a particular geographical imaginary of security and threat, this paper is both a call for nuanced interpretation and more sustained investigation of the way in which geopolitics, demography and cartography relate to borders, sovereignty, and nationalism in creating geographies of exclusion.

Kaunas Antano Škėmos kūryboje: žvilgsnių sankirtoje

This study “Kaunas in Škėma’s works: intersections of perspectives” is inspired by a wish to deny a widespread opinion that the White Shroud conforms to the popular ideas that Vilnius is idolized and Kaunas is pictured as a profane place. Škėma’s works testify about experiences of writer’s adolescence and youth, spent in Kaunas (1925–1940), the city’s urban renewal that took place in the beginning of 1930s, the violence of bolshevism and the events of starting war at 1941. Škėma’s works are contain distinct biographical, anthropological, esthetical, mythopoetic and historic levels. Possible relations between literature and history are considered by acknowledging Škėma’s texts as especially valuable not only in artistic sense, but also the sense of cultural memory.

Fragmentas iš Valstybės centralinės bibliotekos istorijos: balsai iš rūsio (1934–1940)

1938 metais kauniečiai Miesto centre galėjo plačiai rinktis, kur eiti paskaityti laikraščių ir pasiskolinti knygų. Didžiausia buvo Valstybės centralinė biblioteka, įsikūrusi Laisvės alėjos viduryje ir turinti per 70 tūkst. spaudinių. Netoliese buvo įsikūrusi Abelio Balošerio biblioteka (per 37 tūkst.). Senamiesčio prieigose buvo įsikūrusios Kauno miesto savivaldybės dr. Vinco Kudirkos ( per13 tūkst.), „Pochodnios“ draugijos (apie 12 tūkst.) bei „Antikvaro“ (arti 14 tūkst.) bibliotekos. Senamiestyje veikė A. Mapu draugijos (8 tūkst.) ir Žydų mokslo mėgėjų draugijos bibliotekos (per 7 tūkst.). Didžiausia buvo netoli Soboro esanti centrinė Vytauto Didžiojo universiteto biblioteka, turinti 172 tūkst. knygų, bet jos skaitykla galėjo naudotis tik studentai.

The Story of Josef Lainck: From German Emigrant to Alien Convict and Deported Criminal to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Inmate

Josef Lainck, a German national emigrated to Canada in July 1927.He arrived in Quebec City and travelled west to Edmonton, Alberta where he became a burglar and shot a police officer. Lainck was arrested in November 1927 and deported to Germany in 1938, upon arrival he was arrested and interned in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp until April 1945.This article will examine Lainck’s emigration to Canada, arrest and deportation to Nazi Germany. Lainck’s case is illuminating as it reveals information on deportations from Canada and the Third Reich’s return migration program and how undesirables were treated within Germany.The Third Reich’s return migration plan encouraged returnees to seek their deportations as a method of return.Canadian extradition procedures cared little for the fate of foreign nationals expatriated to the country of their birth regardless of the form of government or the turmoil that plagued the nation.This work will compare Canadian to American deportation rates as an illustration of Canada’s harsh deportation criterion.In this article, the policies and practices of immigration and deportation are discussed within a framework of insecurity as a key driver for human mobility in the first half of the 20th century.

The constrains of the native language instruction was arranged by same discriminative legislation in Romania between the two WW. This lows eliminated the use of native language in the state instructions system, that resulted in the amplification of the role of religious school system. The effects haven’t been neutralized yet. The contemporary generation who grew up in the era of the information inhibitional communist regime don’t know or superficially know the school history of that time. In this synthesis I vould like to adjust this hiatus.

Geograful francez Emmanuel de Martonne şi mediul românesc. Elemente de imagologie şi constatări proprii din Basarabia postbelică

In the post-World War I period, the Romanian environment was receiving particular attention from the international academic environment, in particular, because of the political and diplomatic questions that begin to be formulated worldwide, among which the most important question was the way how the new frontiers of the Romanian state should be drawn. In the context of these questions, perhaps the most “illustrious connoisseur” of the Romanian environment, in the person of the French geographer Emmanuel de Martonne, will undertake a series of documentary journeys in the Romanian environment for the Paris-Versailles Peace Conference. His reports, as Secretary of the Romanian Affairs Committee, grounded political and diplomatic decisions in the case of Romania, and the concept of “Great Romania”, that was created after the war, bears his mark. Following his voyage to Bessarabia, a report was published that included his personal findings in the region. They give us a true image of the Bessarabian environment, describing elements regarding the population of the region, elements of infrastructure and, most importantly, elements regarding the ethnic perceptions of the population.
