In a way, it is a review of the book “Archaeology and other things… A contribution to the thirtieth anniversary of the archaeological expedition of the Leningrad Palate of Pioneers” edited in St.-Petersburg in 2002. It is a large volume (of over 500 pages) written by its 65 authors for their own pleasure; it is a collective book compiled of personal memoirs, memories, but at the same time it turns to be extremely interesting for any reader. It tells about the longstanding archaeological expedition to Siberia organized by the school archaeological club at the Leningrad Palate of Pioneers. It was a real expedition, in which the schoolchildren from Leningrad worked under the leadership of several professional archaeologists. Dozens of schoolchildren spent summers in this expedition, collecting impressions, building their life and work skills through participation in collective activities. The author of this review analyses the environment conditioning the schoolchildren’s activities in that far-away and harsh expedition, shows its heroes doing their complicated and necessary business.

In the review two recent books on the archaeological theory and methods are critically considered. The first of them is the book by Yu.L. Shchapova “Introduction to artefactology” (2000). The second book is “Systematic classification of archaeological science” (2000) by Yu.P. Kholyushkin and E.D. Grazhdannikov. The author finds the classification and systematization schemes presented in the books rather contradictory and insufficiently elaborated.

The article studies M.T. Kashuba’s monograph “Early Iron Age in the Forest-Steppe between the Dniester and the Siret: Kozia-Saharna” recently published in the Stratum Plus journal (№3, 2000), which is dedicated to the problems of cultural and historical development of territories east of the Carpathians in the early I millennium BC. The author states her point of view on the problem of «early stage in iron processing» and the genesis and typology of one-ring bit. Finally, the author remarks that M.T. Kashuba’s monograph is a milestone of archaeological research of the Carpathian-Danube zone.

In his comments, the author starts from the problems of modern archaeology touched upon by the authors of the reviewed volume, and addresses the problem of self-reflection in science. He draws the readers’ attention to the fact that the modern science still has not overcome the contradictions noticed already by Nietzsche, and which grew even more complicated in postmodernism. As the author believes, a key to solution of these problems lies in the necessity to reform the ethics of the science, which will allow, first of all, to direct the destructive potential of postmodernism into the creative direction. In author’s opinion, when engaged in reform of its ethics, it would be useful for science to consider the experience of “Dao science”, and Shou Dao first of all.

K.V. Kasparova, V.E. Eremenko’s opponent, is quite positive about his work in general, though she makes a number of comments. She does not agree, in particular, with the too early date of the stage C1b in La Téne (225-190 BC); again, she is not quite convinced with an attempt to distinguish a stage on Zarubintsy sites, preceding the marches of Bastarnae to the Balakans in 179-168. She also points out a number of inaccuracies, particularly, in synchronisation of phases on the cemeteries of Poienesti, Lukashevka and Dolineni.

K.V. Kasparova is rather friendly, though quite critical about the commented article. First of all, she criticises the author for weak knowledge of modern European literature (Godłowski, 1977, 1977a; Woźniak 1977; 1979) and citation of apparently obsolete works (Hachman 1961). In particular, the initial date of La Téne D1 has been changed already; it was earlier based on the wrong dating of the fall of Celtic oppidum Manching in 15 BC. Second, for a number of inaccuracies committed in description of fibulae, statements of various researchers’ views, etc.

In this case K.V. Kasparova was asked by “Sovetskaya Arheologiya” Journal to act as a referee in debate between two researchers from Belarus: L.D. Poboli and A.G. Mitrofanov. The former published a big volume in 1983, called “Arheologicheskie pamyatniki Byelorussii: Zheleznyi Vek” (Archaeological Sites in Byelorussia: Iron Age), and the latter one made a review of the book, where he marked many inaccuracies, like one and the same site being cited under different names, while several different sites are united under one name, etc. L.D. Poboli’s response was the article, which K.V. Kasparova was asked to comment. After studying the materials, she draws a conclusion that the reviewer was right in all the cases. Besides, she adds her own observations. The conclusion she makes is the following: it is dangerous to use L.D. Poboli’s book as a reference tool, which it pretends to be. There are too many errors and inaccuracies in it.

The objective of this review is to inform the readers about a new monograph in Romanian language. The book titled “Free Dacians in Moldova. Archaeological Records. Cemeteries Podeni and Zvoryshtea” by M.Ignat studies material and spiritual culture of the Dacians on the lands between the Carpathians and Prut river in II-III cc. A.D. The monograph publishes material collected on two Dacians cemeteries of the time and oflers author`s own typology of pottery and other goods. The author provides both traditional typology and systematization of the grave goods by role and use of each item in the funeral rite. Of major attention is study of the funeral rite among the free Dacians in various aspects: from classification of graves to reconstruction of cremation ceremony and religious beliefs about existence after death. Based on differences in funeral rite, the author gives a classification of Poeneshti cemeteries, as the published sites belong to this group, and divides it into chronological phases which are synchronized with neighbour cultures and cultural groups.

The author analyses the book by Penner S. 1998. Schliemanns Schachtgräberrund und der europäische Nordosten.-Bonn dedicated to one of the most actual studies of the Late Middle – Early Late Bronze Age in Eastern Europe: the origin of the war chariot and its typical harness. The review contains a minute analysis of the typology offered by S. Penner of some types of cheekpieces of the time. Consequently, the author agrees with the main conclusion of the researcher that this cultural phenomenon takes its origin in Eastern Europe, extending thereafter to the Carpathian and Balkan region and Greece. The author believes, however, that so general conclusions would hardly meet the demands to this paper. She thinks that the obtained types, first of all discoid bone cheekpieces, cannot serve as a basis for study of cultural and historical development of the phenomenon, the so called “chariot aristocracy”. This material can neither be used for relative dating of the sites. Nevertheless, the author emphasises the importance of this paper for a further study of the problem and believes that some conclusions of S. Penner concerning grooved or lamellar cheekpieces, and especially the metal items, deserve a close attention of the researchers.
