The main aim of this paper is to show the specificity of the perception of own ethnicity of theGerman (or Alsatian)-speaking population living in Alsace in France. Seeing that theGerman-population (or population speaking German dialect) live outside Alsace too, it ispossible to make relatively efficient compared to the influence of government in shapingethnicity and language. This paper should give an answer to the question: What is therelationship between state and ethnicity of inhabitants and how Alsatians develop their ownethnicity?

The fragment of the novel by Jean Paul Richter “Siebenkäs (Blumen-, Frucht- und Dornenstücke oder Ehestand, Tod und Hochzeit des Armenadvokaten F. St. Siebenkäs im Reichsmarktflecken Kuhschnappel“ <”Flower, Fruit, and Thorn Pieces; or, the Married Life, Death, and Wedding of Siebenkäs, Poor Man’s Lawyer”>,1796–1797), known as "The Atheist’s Dream," the full German original title being “Rede des toten Christus vom Weltgebäude herab, dass kein Gott sei” (“Speech of the Dead Christ from the Universe that there is no God”), presents one of the most important romantic night-visions: in metaphysical dimension it presents a terrifying Apocalypse without God, and a luciferic destruction of cosmic perpetual matter; in aesthetic dimension it indicates a triumph of liberated phantasmagorical imagination. Intentional or accidental traces of “Jean-Paulian night” are found in the works of Fyodor Dostoevsky (Ippolit’s “confession” from “The Idiot,” 1869; the short story “Bobok,” 1873), in the short story by Bolesław Prus (“Pleśń świata” <”Mould of the World”>, 1884) and in Thomas Mann’s (Castorp’s “snow” vision from “Der Zauberberg” <”The Magic Mountain”>, 1924). Eschatological or cosmic visions of the characters (narrators) produced as a result of demonic temptation of imagination present a dehumanised world of chaos and death subordinated to biological determinism and, as in Jean Paul Richter, constitute a kind of worldview shock autotherapy.

„Od lokální k cikánské škole“: homogenizace školní třídy a měnící se role učitele

The article is a case study of two primary schools (which educate children ages 6−16), where almost all the pupils are Roma. We describe the genesis of the process through which segregation (i.e. changing from a “local” to a “gypsy” school) was established, as well as the outcomes of it, which included a massive outflow of both teachers and non-Roma pupils from the schools. We pay close attention to the changing status of the schools, as well as the impact of the transformation upon the remaining teachers. Voice is also given to the Roma parents whose children go to these schools, as well as the school’s representatives (directors, deputies and local politicians) responsible for the financial running of the schools. Overall, the presented data shows a colourful mosaic of segregation, one which officially does not exist, and for which there is no solution easily acceptable to all those affected.

The following text is a fragment of the dialogue between Inga Iwasiów and Agnieszka Graff about the book Graff. Jestem stąd [Graff. I am from here]. The conversation took place on 5 December 2014 at the Helena Radlińska Pedagogical Library in Szczecin. The main topics discussed are women’s autobiographical gesture and its ‘audacity’ and the author’s process of coming to feminist consciousness during her studies in the USA. The dialogue also concerns individual and collective aspects of autobiography, different approaches to education and the canon, and the ways these affect intellectual choices and attitudes.

„Pamiątka, Zabawka, Talizman” czyli Żydzi fantomowi

The exhibition Souvenir, Talisman, Toy, prepared by Erica Lehrer and shown in Cracow’s Ethnographic Museum in Summer 2013, deals with the phenomena of Jew figures production and currently extremely popular the "Jew with a coin" image. The phenomenon bears full characteristics of folk art. However, it is Holocaust that took place in Poland during the German occupation that should be its valid reference. This historical context that results in, for example, stereotypical way of portraying the exterminated neighbours (this way is often perceived as intentionally anti-Semitic), is not fully analysed or worked through at the exhibition. The rich ethnographic material shown in Cracow is calling for a comment that would include scientific descriptions of Polish-Jewish relations that are being formulated at, for example, the Polish Centre for Holocaust Research. The phenomena of the evoked images production, which became more intense in the last twenty or thirty years, has all the qualities of "phantom memory" or post-memory, which character, as well origins, should be thoroughly analysed.
