As a result of the three Polish partitions, the Polish state ceased to exist on the map of Europe for 123 years. The tone was set, however, much earlier through the unfortunate combination of geopolitics of an emerging Russian Empire and the anarchicpolitical system of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth that specifically positioned the state for its demise. The fact that the devastation caused by the Second World War and its consequences in Europe was, to some extent, overcome by Poland’s Solidarity movement is in a way a true miracle. Solidarity has opened the gates for freedom and justice. A longstanding peace and stability in Ukraine and the Middle East should be built on such a base.
