In the debate whether Ježeva kućica (The Hedgehog’s Little House), a poetic work of the Serbian writer Branko Ćopić, written in Serbian standard language, can officially find its place on the list of literary works for the 1st class of the elementary school, the author of this article thinks that it is not to be put on that list. Although the poem has been partly adapted to the Croatian language, it was not translated as a whole, and as such (untranslated) it would be incomprehensible for Croatian pupils or it would require too many explanations for all elementary school pupils regardless of their age.

Jedna je profesorica hrvatskoga zamolila da ogovorim na pet pitanja o sklonidbi nekoliko imena. Pitanja su različita i za neka se može dati jednoznačan odgovor, a neka su pitanja malo teža, ali poteškoća zaista postoji, zato što se i pojedini pravopisci kolebaju pa ću odgovoriti ne navodeći ta kolebanja. Prema njezinim pitanjima, evo odgovora.

The 100th anniversary of Karadžić’s actual victory in Serbia was also marked in Croatia. On that occasion, Professor Antun Barac wrote the article “About Croatian Followers of Vuk Karadžić” in which he clearly refutes the thesis that the Croats have taken their language from the Serbs. In spite of the closeness of the Croatian and Serbian standard languages, Professor Barac, nevertheless, freely speaks about the standard Croatian language, which suggests that there was relative language freedom at that time of communist dictatorship.

The author gives comments on Barac’s article, emphasizing the relative language freedom reflected in the fact that Professor Barac, without any reluctance, uses the term standard Croatian language and thus resolutely refutes the Serbian thesis that the Croats have taken their language from the Serbs - the thesis which the Serbs often repeat even today.

Through a review of selected grammars of the Croatian language, from Kašić until the present day, an analysis is given of the status of adjective as nominal predicate regarding the category of definiteness, and relating to the rules about the forms in which adjectives can be used as nominal predicates. It is shown that the adjective itself, used as nominal predicate, cannot express definiteness for two reasons: 1) because as nominal predicate it belongs to the verbal paradigm, and 2) because there is no noun in the nominal predicate the definiteness of which would be expressed by the adjective as the grammaticalized means for expressing the category of definiteness in that nominal predicate. It is emphasized that it is wrong to draw conclusions about the definiteness or indefiniteness of an adjective only on the basis of its form, since the grammatical category of definiteness, as well as the forms through which it can be expressed, can only be discussed in connection with the noun.

Functional styles show differences in the occurrence and use of a number of language features. In this paper the authors analyze different usage of phraseological units in different language styles, ranging form styles in which phraseological units are rare or nonexistent to the styles in which phraseological units are extremely common, and form an important language characteristic of the style. Phraseological units are especially frequent in the journalistic style. This style is especially interesting for researchers of phraseology as new phraseolgical units first occur in this style.
