The article examines the Croatian language in the light of Croatian martyrdom anniversaries. The deaths of Zrinski and Frankopan disrupted the development of a mixed (hybrid) type of Croatian literary language, and prior to all other Croatian martyrdom anniversaries there was a period of linguistic unitarianism and suppression of Croatian language characteristics. This suppression was disguised under the name Serbo-Croatian used for the Croatian language as an expression of Serbocentrism that was frequently used as a synonym for Yugocentrism. All these anniversaries were preceded by a short period of striving for the specific characteristics of the Croatian language and by efforts for its unhindered development and equal position in a multinational state. These aspirations continue in all the events the anniversaries of which we are celebrating. These were crucial years in the development of the Croatian language, especially of the Croatian language of law. This development was marked by linguistic purism, by deserbization in the Croatian state, and by resistance against linguistic unitarianism in the multinational federal state.

The paper analyses the spelling rule about the use of dashes to mark the reported speech in the “Croatian Orthography” published by the Institute for Croatian Language and Linguistics (2013). This rule, namely, differs from the solutions in spelling manuals from the 1940s onwards and from the publishers’ and school speller practices that were uniform for at least 70-odd years. Analysing the principles stated in the foreword to “Croatian Orthography”, the author wants to show that this change is not based on any of these principles, but is, on the contrary, completely subjective. The author also wants to draw attention to the fact that authors of orthographic manuals should not have such great freedom in changing some established spelling rules.

lf we compare Florschütz's grammar with grammars written before Maretić, or by Maretić, or those written according to contemporary norm, we come to two conclusions. The grammars are not to a great extent written in Vuk's tradition, and are not removed from the Croatian tradition it might seem at first glance. These grammars were not adapted only on a formal level so that they may seemingly reflect an illusion of pertaining to a national language policy and they were not adapted so that one could claim that they belonged to the forerunners of Croatian grammars.
