Focusing on The Sheep and the Whale (Le mouton et la baleine, 2001) by Moroccan- Canadian playwright Ahmed Ghazali, this essay examines political and ethical issues concerning human migration from Africa to Europe. The play’s representation of human rights abuses in the Strait of Gibraltar and the dilemmas facing illegal migrants, refugees and asylum seekers will be situated in relation to current debates about the state of exception and the new forms of neoliberal governmentality employed under the conditions of globalisation. In one way, Ghazali’s drama pays homage to those trying to enter Fortress Europe ? and specifically to the nameless young African bodies washed up on the shores of southern Spain. It attempts, in part, to exorcise the unspoken violence of these people’s deaths in what has become a vast African cemetery, while prompting us to ask what can be done in order to reduce the death toll in the Gibraltar Strait.

This study is a contribution to the social-cultural interpretation of Doina Rusti’s work from the perspective of the discourse (fictional first) about the construction of identity, investigating the social role of the individual, his deduction. We can observe, after reading the novel, „The Phantom of the Mill”, that the events of the childhood and youth of the author, subtly presented here, under the diaphanous veil of imagination, get various avatars in subsequent fiction works. In the case of Doina Rusti’s work, we find that identity is related to social and cultural institutions, but also to individual strategies in self – assertion. One of the ways used the author and requiring increased affection from the lecturer is the mask game based on figures invoked in the sinuous route of identity construction. We also notice that the most important aspects of the author’s life can also be derived from her fictional works which are a reflection of her inner world. Her creation thus becomes a real adventure for the reader who is eager to know it, and this writing is nothing but a miraculous journey through the world of self. We can say that through her work, Doina Rusti brings into the forefront the unfrozen narrative and the free play of imagination, but she also succeeds in introducing the reader into a true labyrinth of identity.

The purpose of this article is to bring the author into a literary genre, her works being the subject of histories, as well as studies related to postwar Romanian prose. Numerous literary critics of the time tried to put Gabriela Adamesteanu's prose in a certain period. Taking into account the moment the author started, it could be part of the generation of the seventies writers, but there are different peculiarities in the poetry of her literature that hinder this endeavour. Both the difficulty of framing the work of the author in a particular generation and the specific elements that offer originality can be explained by her writing, through her unmistakable poetics to accommodate two seemingly opposite principles, namely the classic and the modern.

The novel Mephisto is one of the most well-known texts by Klaus Mann. Its fame results not only from its literary virtuosity, but also and primarily from the enormous media attention which was caused by the novel’s publication. The decision of the Federal Constitutional Court, in which it dealt with the relationship between freedom of art and other constitutionally guaranteed rights of individuals, launched the unprecedented career of this novel. This article describes Klaus Mann’s political views and their development in the 1920s during the time when the National Socialist movement was strengthening and the writer made the decision to emigrate. The essay deals with the circumstances of creating the novel considering both biographical and political issues. The novelist is described from the perspective of the reality of the 1930s during the National Socialist regime and the time after his emigration. The concern of the article is not a literary analysis of the novel, but to take a look at the novelist’s development up until the moment of finishing his work as a protest against National Socialism. Another goal of the essay is to analyze the decision of the Federal Constitutional Court, which regards the balance between freedom of art and other basic rights. Considering the synergy of both methodological approaches and the interdisciplinary view on the problem, the article represents a novel attempt to give a complex view on the relationship between art (literature) and the reality of a totalitarian state and between the relationship art–state in the conditions of a democratic state.

The paper deals with the broad concept of strangeness in the literary work of Anna Mitgutsch, a contemporary Austrian writer. The topic of strangeness is a keynote in her rich literary output. Mitgutsch’s experience of being abroad (travelling to the Middle East and south-east Asia, living and working in Israel, England, Korea and The USA) is reflected in such novels as Das andere Gesicht, In fremden Städten or Abschied von Jerusalem. Her characters are nomads, people looking for identity and homeland, trying to escape alienation. The feeling of being a stranger is also present in their relations with their loved ones (Die Annäherung).

The paper describes the participation of Tomaszów Mazowiecki’s Protestant population (of German origin) in the January Uprising (1863–1864). Special emphasis is placed upon four particularly spectacular biographies. Arthur William Benni (1839–1867) was a social revolutionary fighting for democracy in Russia and for the freedom of Poland and Italy. Dr. Karol Henryk Abraham Benni (1843–1916), known under the pseudonym ‘Henryk Wilk’, was a secret emissary and an insurgent in 1863–1864; he later became a distinguished physician, as well as a social worker and economic activist. Two protestants of German origin who fought in the January Uprising lived to their old age in the restored Republic of Poland. Karol Henryk August Sarré (1843–1927), a young January insurgent, served in the punitive detachment of the Tsarist Army, and was finally deported to Irkutsk (Siberia) for twelve years. Gustaw Glaesmann (1844–1928), a member of the national gendarmerie in 1863–1864, was deported to Siberia for 25 years. After his return from Siberia (1889) he worked as a teacher, and finally was buried in Tomaszów Mazowiecki.

At the end of year 2018, falls the 100th anniversary of outbreak of Greater Poland Uprising 1918/1919 in Prussian Province of Posen. During this jubilee, in the public sphere as well as, to lesser extent in domestic circles, that sacrifice of Polish patriotism from before 100 years, will be commemorated. Official, state proceedings will focus on commemorating the participants of the Uprising. It will pose as an occasion to celebrate and to deposit the wreaths with white-red sashes by the memorials. Flags will be flapping, drumrolls will be beaten and oaths, to never forget the Uprising in the Province of Posen of 1918/19, will be taken in the presence of state and insurrectionary banners. Anniversary proceedings are sure to be accompanied by numerous topical papers which are bound not to slip by the German observers. Therefore, factual, scientific and even literary papers are expected to be published. Anticipated spirit of said jubilee is encapsulated in commemorative poetic works written by the Author of this paper. This study stands as the plane on which the Author engage in Polish-German poetic discourse with German poets, those who witnessed or participated in the events from before 100 years, as well as with contemporary authors associated with Province of Posen in the past or at present.Because of varied emotional charge and political tenor, this lyrical prelude to next year’s 100th anniversary of outbreak of Greater Poland Uprising 1918/1919 and its tone, in collation with its German counterparts, varies from remaining in sharp dissonance to sometimes become a duet or a perfect harmony.

The main focus of this article is an analysis of one of Kurt Lück’s most extensive works – Mythos vom Deutschen in der polnischen Volksüberlieferung und Literatur – published in 1938. The article attempts to answer the question of the status of Lück’s large work of research into the “German East” in the 1930s, and the question of how the work was evaluated by German and Polish historians, ethnologists, and literary critics. The book was also presented in the context of the anti-Polish attitude of the author, whose activities and publications were strongly influenced by National Socialism.

Herman Stehr (1864–1940) belonged to the generation of writers who had the chance to establish a serious opposition against National Socialism during the Weimar Republic, the Fascist movement and the Third Reich. Not only their age but also their experience predestined them to assume such an honourable position. Hermann Stehr, at the early stage of his career, was considered a modern writer, not only because of his writings but also because of his political views, when in the 1920s he took an active part in the building of democratic structures of the Weimer Republic. Around 1930/31 a change occurred his work and in his political views. From this time onwards he actively supported the Nazis and legitimized their politics in his writings both nationally and internationally. The symbiosis between him and the Nazis became more and more visible as they started promoting him as one of the leading German writers. The aim of this paper is to present one of the most renowned German authors of the first half of the 20th century, who due to his conformism during the Third Reich lost his chance to defend humanistic values. Consequently, this paper proves that it is a grave error to classify Stehr, a writers of conservative views, as part of Inner Emigration. Hermann Stehr most certainly did not belong to that group.

The writers of the German Democratic Republic often reached for myths to convey forbidden issues in an oblique way and to deceive the censors. In an interview Heiner Müller admits that this was an attempt to raise crucial questions about socialism: “I want neither to write ancient plays today nor to adapt ancient topics. In the early 1960s plays about Stalinism were forbidden. It was necessary to invent such a model to raise really important issues. So that people would recognize them at once.” On the basis of the works Philoctetes and The Horatian the reception of two ancient myths will be followed in plays by Heiner Müller. The German playwright employs an interesting strategy: he adopts myths in varied, condensed forms, however, the plot is set in mythical circumstances. Müller does not make an attempt to modernize his dramas by transferring their content into a new setting of space and time, but he draws parallels between past and present. Müller’s plays are in Norbert Otto Eke’s opinion, both historical and contemporary. Interestingly, according to Brecht’s idea and his „alienation effect” the spectator should not identify with the events on stage, but only follow and analyse them. For this reason, the works by Müller can be qualified as didactic.
