This is a review of the most recent bibliography on St. Clement of Ohrid, which was prepared by Neli Gancheva, a philologist and bibliographer at the Cyrillo-Methodian Research Centre of the Bulgarian Academy of Science. This study, dedicated to the 1100 anniversary of St. Clement’s dormition, is a continuation of the previous Cyrillo-Methodian bibliographies (1934; 1942; 1980; 1983; 2003; 2010) and bibliographies on St. Clement (1966; 1980). It reflects 1302 publications of the last 35 years in the Bulgarian and foreign scholarship as well as popular papers and artistic works (both fine arts and music are included here as well); folklore texts about St. Clement and the scholarly research on the folklore material. In summary, the bibliographic work by Neli Gancheva comes on time, brings contributions and is extremely useful.

From the point of view of their geographical locations, the Romanian living in Hungary are not a compact group but are rather scattered in several settlements in Békés, Hajdú-Bihar and Csongrád counties, where they live together with Hungarians, Serbs, Slovaks, Germans and Roma. The Romanian traditional communities have lived isolated in certain settlements, and that is why they have managed to preserve their specifically Romanian features and their specific secular dialect for a long time (up to the 60s). Having lived in a Hungarian environment for centuries, their traditions underwent transformations acquiring a special character. The field studies were initially hindered by the lack of specialists. Starting with the 1960’s, the first articles, studies and volumes appeared about the various fields of ethnography and the folklore of the Romanians in the country. In the 1970s, researching the ethnography and folklore of the Romanians living in Hungary officially fell into the duties of the Békés County Museum, and Research Institute of the Romanians in Hungary was established in the 1990s, institutionalizing thus the research. The conservation of traditions had an important role in the life of Romanian communities until recent years because, alongside with their native language, traditional culture was the second significant element defining ethnic identity.

The fifth volume of A. E. R. (=„Atlasul Etnografic Român”, „The Romanian Ethnographic Atlas”) puts an end to the work of three generation of ethnographers, from the late Romulus Vuia, Romulus Vulcănescu, Paul Petrescu, Ion Vlăduţiu to the youngest researchers of the Institute of Ethnography and Folklore „Constantin Brăiloiu” of the Romanian Academy (e. g. dr. Emil Ţârcomnicu, dr. Lucian Aurelian David, dr. Ionuţ Semuc, Cătălin Alexa, drd. Laura Ioana Negulescu, dr. Adelina Dogaru, Cristina Mihală Douglas) who, alongside their older colleagues (e.g. Alina Ioana Ciobănel, Cornelia Belcin Pleşca, Paul Drogeanu, Ofelia Văduva et al.), directed by dr. Ion Ghinoiu, finished one of the most important work instruments of the Romanian ethnology – the Atlas. A masterpiece of scientific work, the AER deserves all our admiration and consideration.

The critic, RaduVoinescu, dedicates a comprehensive analytical study to the ethno-folklorist, Gherasim Rusu Togan, highlighting his researcher contribution, through a solid ‘phenomenological evaluation’. Marking his folklorist work, the critic emphasizes on the elements that give out originality and creative uniqueness: ‘The books of Gherasim Rusu Togan sit in a well-watered esthetics, on one side, of various lectures regarding the authors that handled rituals and ceremonials’ philosophy, of ethnologists and folklorists’ studies, while on the other, last but not least - and here it resides their exceptional interest – the side of personal research results, undertaken mostly in Hartibaciului Valley, the author’s natal area,...in which Ghijasa de Sus occupies, easy understandable, a privileged place..’ And in all their aspects, these creations are considered by the renowned critic ‘a valuable good and one of the last authentic testimonies of wealth of concepts and practices, which belong to the traditional man who, at some point, will become history’.

The cultural program of the Astra Association, which included the promoting of the folk heritage, was carried out by means of the reviews being published, either in the form of printed collections of folk literature or lectures delivered on various occasions on that particular topic. Such approaches stimulated and enhanced the idea of the cultural unity of the Romanian people that was faced in the second half of the nineteenth century with most severe historic challenges. Cultural tradition and national identity were focused upon by the Romanian intellectuals of that time, most of the them members of the Astra Association, who stressed the opportunity of folk literature and ethnographic researches. As a result, various critical studies and collections of Romanian folk literature, traditions, and customs were published and are now thoroughly examined in this article.
