As the title illustrates, the paper Four Decades of Philological Education in Sibiu represents a brief survey of the methods of studying the traditional culture and civilization within the learning process and academic research since the foundation of the Faculty of History and Philology in Sibiu, 40 years ago. The article evokes the outstanding personality of Gheorghe Pavelescu, a professor of folklore and ethnology, whose scientific prestige gave the University of Sibiu the opportunity to integrate its studies into the Romanian ethnological movement from the beginning. In parallel, the ethnology department of the Institute of Social Research developed research into traditional culture and civilization as did the Association of Folklore Researchers and Ethnographers in Sibiu County, founded in 1977. The Faculty of History and Philology took part in all the major and significant ethnological research projects organized in Mărginime, Valea Târnavelor and Ţara Oltului, mostly by professors who also coordinated the first printed syntheses starting in the 1970’s: Gheorghe Pavelescu, Cornel Irimie, Corneliu Bucur, Ilie Moise. The journals “Forschungen zur Volks – und Landeskunde”, “Transilvania” and “Studies of Ethnology” have had a major role in ethnological studies by periodically publishing the results of the investigations into traditional culture and civilization in southern Transylvania.

This article contains the bibliography of the poems written on special occasions and dedicated to bishop Strossmayer, comprising the list of the first verses printed on the solemn occasion of the bishop’s ordainment (1850) up to the poems of condolences marking the bishop’s death and the sporadic verses from the end of the 1930s and the beginning of the 1940s, including the independently published works and occasional poems published in all the periodicals issued in this period. Based on the original research of the periodicals (Katolički list, Vrhbosna, Glasnik biskupija Bosanske i Sriemske, Strossmayerov koledar, Vienac, Prosvjeta, Hrvatsko kolo), along with the input from broad-spectrum bibliographies and special bibliographic reviews of this corpus (Srakić, Ćurić, Zovko), this bibliography -unlike the previous ones which were limited to either certain journals or to selected authorial contributions –provides the most complete bibliographic list of the occasional poems dedicated to bishop Strossmayer ever made.

Personality of the period 1907-1951, born on January 30, 1875 and deceased under severe conditions on 12 March 1951 in the prison in Sighet, Maramureş County. A law graduate in 1899 with the work entitled "On the evolution of rural property in Romania", he began practicing in the lawyers' bar in Ilfov County, as well as his collaboration with the political economy teacher Nicolae Basilescu. After several years of practicing lawyer he decides to pursue doctoral studies in law in Paris and in 1907 he holds the thesis "La question agreaire. Commentaire critique of rural legislation in Roumanie, Angleterre, Ireland, Allemagne“ (Taşcă 1926, 4). Upon returning to the country, he earned the lecturer's lecture at the Department of Political Economy of the Faculty of Law. Motivated by the fact that a law doctor does not entitle him to teach economics and determined by this reasoning, Gheorghe Taşcă returns to Paris to attend the doctoral school in economics, and in 1910 he holds the thesis "Les nouvelles reformes agraires en Roumanie" Doctor of Economics. In 1925 he was elected and became a correspondent member of the Romanian Academy. The term political economy in Gheorghe Taşca's concept covers the whole spectrum of economic sciences: "The political economy deals with the research of the norms by which goods that are necessary for the satisfaction of human needs are produced, circulated and distributed." Involved in the economic scientific and political life, Gheorghe Taşca had a particularly active activity especially in the development of the cooperative system. This research paper is an improved and updated English version of a study presented at the International Conference "Agriculture and Rural Development in a Regional Perspective," 2016, Bucharest, Romania, organized by the Institute of Agrarian Economy of the Romanian Academy.
