The article deals with the theoretical description of the construction Dativus cum infinitivo (Dci) in the Slavonic languages. The analysis is based primarily on data from Old Bulgarian. The theoretical framework for the description of the Dci-construction is that TG-grammar. The Dci syntagms are shown to be nonhomogenous syntactic structures. A typology of Dci structures is suggested, in which four types are distinguished. The article concludes that three of the four constructions deserve to be treated as genuine Dci-constructions(Dci-II, -III and -IV), as it is only in these that nominal element in the dative encodes the subject of the verbal action denoted by the infinitive.

The paper discusses the paradigm of special verb forms for rendering the utterances of others in Bulgarian, frequently dubbed with the term “renarrated/renarrative mood” or “l-periphrasis without the auxiliary verb съм” from the point of view of the most recent findings of cognitive linguistics. Within the confines of the conceptual domain evidentiality, which is to be distinguished from epistemic modality, the existence of “an archmood” is postulated in the verbal system of Bulgarian. Since in the use of such forms, both from the point of view of conceptual structure and linguistic semantics, what happens is the rendering of the utterances of others, it is assumed that the rule in such cases is intralingual translation. This affects a lot of the features of the relationship between the ownership of the speech act and the grammatic and semantic structure of the quoted utterance of another and its rendition via forms from the paradigm of renarrative mood. This involves complex cognitive operations, which is of marked significance for people learning Bulgarian.

In recent years, comparative literature has affected a lively response to the dynamic transformations of its socio-cultural environment: it has declared the death of the old discipline and the beginning of a new one, and has increasingly set foot into the realm of the modern digital laboratory. It has, however, too seldom made use of a historical analysis of its own origins, which could have an impact on how future tasks and opportunities in comparative studies are perceived. This paper looks back to the rhetorical legacy of the category of comparison — one of the traditions that led to the institutionalization of comparative studies in the nineteenth century, and which could be useful in an attempt to rewrite the discipline’s history, particularly if grounded in translation studies.

Publishing, getting informed and acting accordingly are the conventionally established relations towards the “news” of one’s passing. Posthumous rituals, alongside other life-cycle rituals and those of folklore calendar expectedly cherish strong cult of the ancestors. While the urbanization process (taking economical, industrial, cultural and other factors into consideration) caused the migration of rural population towards cities, the development of media enabled constant influx of urban influences into rural areas and vice versa. Printed and electronic media, as a consequence, are fast becoming representatives of a specific merger of the two areas, if one can even speak of a categorically precise differentiation between rural and urban areas. In this paper, we are examining obituaries as forms of manifestation of traditional culture in urban environment. The research is being conducted on the basis of obituaries published in print media located in Kragujevac. Adopting the ethnolinguistic perspective, the author strives to describe the ritual role of posthumous notices. As a secondary aim, the paper presents an attempt to establish a model of theoretical-methodological paradigm to be used for examination from the aspect of urban ethnolinguistics. The analysis has shown that journalistic obituaries have a substituent role in posthumous rituals and that the tradition of mourning survives in urban environment through replacement of the folklore genre (lament) with journalistic notice (obituary).

Having in mind that prefix over- is very productive in forming new words in English, one of the aims of this study is to analyse its morphological and semantical characteristics. Methods used in this study are qualitative and quantitative and are based on word analysis. We have tried to interpret all possible meanings of prefix over- and compare them to the previously conducted researches on the same topic. As the analysis has shown, prefix over- has more meanings than it is usually stated, especially in reference grammars of the English language. Moreover, it is added not only to verbs and adjectives but to all open class words. The majority of nouns with prefix over- are the existing nouns ending in -or/-er, -ing, -ness, while the prefix is not added to nouns ending in -hood, -ant, -ee, -ie, -let, -ette. The study has also discussed all possible translations of prefix over- in Serbian. The meaning of prefix over- in nouns is not always ‘excessive’. There are nouns in which over- has miscellaneous meaning as in overgrainer, overtaking, overcoating, and overbalance. In verbs, the meaning of over- is mostly ‘excessive’, but it also carries local, metaphorical and accidental meanings. Prefix over- in adjectives intensifies the basic meaning of the adjective to which it is added. Adverbs with prefix over- are mostly ‘excessive’ modifiers of adjectives. Since the topic has not been thoroughly discussed in the past, we believe that this study will contribute to both morphological and lexical-semantic researches in the two languages.

In this paper, the English and Serbian groups of synonyms of the verb свађати се (English to argue) have been examined in order to establish whether the proposed equivalents in dictionaries were precise enough. Firstly, the paper elaborates on different types of meaning which can influence the formation of semantic featuress of the given lexemes. Afterwards, by means of componential analysis and consulting dictionaries and the gathered corpora, the authors have underscored the semantic features which bring out the subtle differences within the groups of synonyms in both Serbian and English. By consulting existing bilingual dictionaries, the authors of this paper wanted to re-evaluate the given suggestions of equivalents. The analysis gave way to the following conclusion: bilingual dictionaries in many cases provide suitable suggestions. However, in several cases, where it was obvious one could use other verbs, there was a repetitive usage of the same equivalent.

The paper examines Serbian and English similes which refer to personality traits and have the adjective (part A) + as (part B) + noun/noun phrase (part C) structure. The similes are excerpted from monolingual and bilingual Serbian and English phraseological dictionaries based on their structural-semantic equivalence. These are first analyzed with regard to their connotative meanings and then divided into positively and negatively colored ones. Within each group, the examples are organized around the personality trait they refer to and compared in terms of their C part with the aim of exploring similarities and differences between the cultures in question. Based on such an analysis, it appears only partially true that similes represent an idiosyncratic feature of language as the corpus demonstrates striking similarities when it comes to the traits such as: goodness, industriousness, dependability, quietness, punctuality, bravery, slyness, callousness, timidity, dishonesty, unreliability, and stubbornness. Furthermore, most similes which have an animal in their C part are negatively colored. The reason for this may lie in The Great Chain of Being in which animals are perceived as a lower form of life and as such inferior to people.

The paper examines the complexity of phrase structure in children’s literature as opposed to literature aimed at adults, using Oto Oltvanyi’s short stories as the corpus. Complexity is expressed through the depth of the phrases and number of their constituents, as well as how densely populated by the phrases the texts themselves are. Both starting hypotheses have been confirmed – the literature for adults is more saturated by phrases, and they are of a more complex structure – both in their depth, and the number of their constituents.
