Metoodilised küsimused on igale teadlasele, seega ka kirjandusteadlasele olulised. Sõltub ju ainesele lähenemise viisist ja mõistetest see, milliste tulemusteni me jõuame. (2Ms 20:7.)

This paper seeks to interpret the fundamental Modernist poem The Waste Land by T. S. Eliot through a set of ideas existing in and arguably creating Modernism as it is known – the mythology of water as the fundamental but fickle fluid Other, subsisting at the basic level of the world and giving life to it while constantly needing to be controlled and tamed by a superior civilizing force – usually masculine – colonizing and taming the unruly savage. This mythology of water has at its core the story of katabasis/nekyia, a symbolic night journey over water deriving from ancient imaginaries, leading into Hell and back. The journey begins with exile from the rational, stable civilized world, and descent into the irrational, chaotic, watery depths of the unconscious and prime matter. In this underwater Hades or Hell, the hero is confronted with the watery beast that is the basis of carnal life at whose hands he suffers a symbolic death, which leads to a rebirth. The beast is often a guardian of precious life-giving treasure, and the victorious hero is allowed to take the spoils with him back to the surface.

Božidar Knežević (1862–1905) was a Serbian philosopher, writer and moralist. His philosophico-historical system is presented in his two-volume Principi istorije [The Principles of History]. As a positivist and evolutionist, he contemplated history as an evolutionary ascent of the universe and nature, since its creation, towards a moral and intellectual unification of humankind. There are different theories on the origin of Knežević’s Misli [Thoughts], his most influential work, which appeared in 1902. This moralistic book was considered to contain some simplified ideas already explored in The Principles of History. The comparison of the two books, however, sheds further light on the problem since most of the aphorisms published in the Thoughts cannot be traced back to The Principles of History. Some thoughts are based on the ideas Knežević brought to the fore in his capital work, but others are products of the author's authentic experiences and deep feelings.

The Hippolytus introduces an original erotological pattern: its protagonist incarnates the purity of the body and soul alike, the two ideals functioning indistinctively and inter-reflectively. An existence deprived of overt sexuality violates the idea of the middle path, ubiquitous in the Hellenic cultural space. It challenges the procreation principle and frames a pretty distinctive form of sensuality. The alienation of sexual desire is not an accidental feature of Hippolytus’ character: on the contrary, it comes as a consequence of the idealized spiritual, ethical and corporeal flawlessness, paired with a supra-corporeal devotion to Artemis, a flawless goddess who reveals herself as “a divinely scented gulp of air”, θεῖονὀδμῆςπνεῦμα (v. 1392). Although her presence is limited to olfactory and auditory sensations, the mortal youth establishes a life-lasting relationship with the Olympian goddess. Euripides thus creates a peculiar vision of veiled sexuality and a new aspect of love, which we hope to shed light on in this paper.

The well-known international theme of the marriage between a man and a fantastic being is stylized both in myth and in the oral literature of Japan. In this paper, we have tried to determine the characteristics of the genre, comparing the stories with those from European and Serbian oral heritage. The oldest Japanese chronicles contain myths about the holy marriages of gods. Among them are zoomorphic creatures, mainly snakes. If the story features a snake god, he transforms himself into a man and visits a woman under cover of darkness. The serpent goddess spends more time in the human form but must return to its original form when it is due to give birth. When a man breaks the taboo and reveals her identity, she leaves, and this act causes cosmological consequences.

The philosophical novel was a favorite genre in France in the 18th century: the validity of a certain "philosophical" point of view was questioned primarily through the novel's plot. Furthermore, since philosophy in the Age of Enlightenment still covered the broadest questions of the spirit, there was a critical approach, for example, to absolutism in politics, providentialism in the religious sphere, the so-called optimism or fatalism in philosophy in the narrower sense. Rather than considering specific teaching through the discussions of his characters, inserted apologies and anecdotes, or the narrator's discursive comments, the novelist left it to the reader to conclude by following the characters' experiences. The paper analyzes how Tristan García's contemporary science fiction novel Jungle Memoirs establishes that ancient procedure in a literary and philosophically relevant way.
