Summary/Abstract: In the presented article, based on sources, the author writes about the rampant epidemics in Bessarabia in the imperial period. In particular, the author notes the epidemics of plague and cholera. Attention is paid to measures taken by local authorities to combat infectious diseases. It is mentioned that the provincial administration formed special advisory committees, which were headed by the Bessarabian civil governor. In addition, quarantine institutions were set up to prevent the plague from entering Bessarabia. Great attention was paid to their arrangement. In this regard, the author dwells on the provisions of the “Charter on Quarantines” approved by Emperor Alexander I (August 21, 1818), which regulated the location of quarantine institutions in all regions and provinces of the Russian Empire, including Bessarabia. The author also points out that the clergy helped the civil authorities in the fight against the epidemics. The students of quarantined educational institutions found shelter in monasteries, and the monks themselves acted as doctors for the affected residents of neighboring villages. On the pages of the official paper of Chisinau and Khotyn Diocese „Kishinevskie yeparkhial’nye vedomosty”, materials were published that informed the priests and parishioners about the various epidemics and how to protect themselves against them. Often, timely actions undertaken by the authorities led to the rapid eradication of the hotbeds of plague and cholera.
